Two young lads who trialled for our reserves tonight. Sampayo has been a Chelsea youth team player for a couple of years whilst Landell has an excellent scoring record from midfield for Wolves youth team.

Long way off but Bennett came from Wolves and Bridcutt from Chelsea. They haven't turned out too bad have they?

To be fair, Bennett was a bit different, he was not far off the first team when they were Championship, and Wolves didn't release him, we bought him off them when he wanted more chance of a regular playing spot.

Having said that, Bridcutt was a trialist and he's been excellent. I'm sure we've been testing out a lot more players of a higher calibre than we used to, can only mean good things for the development squad, and eventually our first team.

With his contacts in the game Poyet definitely brings players in that we would not have had a chance of landing before.

Last season our academy was comprised entirely of local players with limited prospect of many making it through to first team standard (Barker/Caskey/Dunk/Walker?).
Currently we have kids who have come to us via Spurs (Kasim) Villa (Simmonds) Chelsea (Sampayo) Wolves (Landell) and Inter Milan (Greenhalgh) and you would have to feel that the quality across the club is much more reflective of our Manager's and our Chairman's ambition.

The ressie's won it 3-0 by the way. Agdestein, OG & Landell off the bench. Greenhalgh got an hour, Sampayo the full 90. And Navarro played a full 90 too, good to hear.

Heard good things at youth level on Landell but be surprised if he has as much chance as some of the others at making the step up to first team. Good to see him back though :)

Is Greenhalgh our player?

Greenhalgh I think made only one appearance as a triallist and then moved on. As of now I don't think he has been invited back.

Youth/Development players can improve at a great rate (some not of course) so whilst a young player 12 months ago was looking "average", they may well be brilliant 12/18 months later. Someone in their mid/late 20s isn't going to improve at that rate. Too many people put too much weight on "known" good players (you do need a few though!) )which you have to buy in. If you create great players then not only do you save money, you can have them playing the right "type" of football so the step up is a natural progression.

This stuff all takes time of course but sometimes the most exciting prospects are those that are young unknown players. Have to put trust in youth/development policy and training.

What's better now, is that the very good youngsters may hang around to progress rather than moving on to previously larger clubs.
