Youth/Development players can improve at a great rate (some not of course) so whilst a young player 12 months ago was looking "average", they may well be brilliant 12/18 months later. Someone in their mid/late 20s isn't going to improve at that rate. Too many people put too much weight on "known" good players (you do need a few though!) )which you have to buy in. If you create great players then not only do you save money, you can have them playing the right "type" of football so the step up is a natural progression.

This stuff all takes time of course but sometimes the most exciting prospects are those that are young unknown players. Have to put trust in youth/development policy and training.

What's better now, is that the very good youngsters may hang around to progress rather than moving on to previously larger clubs.
