Oddly, he DOES seem to be a galvanizing and attention-grabbing figure for MLS.
The passion of the fans against him, appears to be doing something more for 'soccer' than hitting a precise pass or nailing a free-kick around a wall inside the post.
If spectators didn't give a monkeys for what he did and said about their league, then they wouldn't be making any fuss.

He has made his own bed there though - you don't just belittle and try to get away from your fans and then openly admit to it in another part of the world you'd rather be.
He's evidently not that smart a cookie.
Spot on!

No sympathy from me - he made his bed, he whelched on his commitments, and now these are the consequences.

How you can have team harmony when, as the BBC reported, he'll earn £3.3m this season in the MLS, and that with missing games, while some of his team mates pull in £12k per season!?

12k? dont believe that.

it funny though, they are getting upset but fail to recognise the standard of football is so shit that they bring in Birchall as a replacement that struggled to get a place in a relegation fighting BHA. He really should just walk away from this career car crash, he might be a one trick pony but its a far better quality trick than they are ready for.

Ah, well you wouldn't get that past them - not a mere few short weeks after taking Brazil to task in the final of a major World football tournament.

Okay, so their best players are cherry-picked to play abroad, but one reason they brought Beckham over was to try and raise the level of the MLS and get those mercenary players playing back in their home country.
Funny how they are becoming closer aligned with Brazil in that respect too - though their league is rather good even without the exported talents.

Until the MLS was created, football was widely played in America - in schools, colleges and universities throughout the nation. Players were often very good, knew and loved the game well, and could dig deep with the same tenacity and passion as anyone.

The problem was, that there was nowhere to play afterwards. TV and stadia did not host events, and the only professional outlets were indoor leagues (5 or 6 a side), or the exhibition teams which had a sort-of professional nepotism for foreign superstars like Pele, Moore, Best and Beckenbauer (okay, and Rodney Marsh ;>)
It was not a breeding ground or even a training ground for the best US talent back then.

Since the US have realized the financial endorsements/advertising/television/spectator potentials for 'soccer' in general, and their swift claims to compete at the highest levels - they are now, at last, a burgeoning competitive nation of/for players.

Funnily enough beorthelm, it is WE who should concern ourselves more about "shit football standards" - for the nation that invented the game we are very, very shit, and can count fewer top World players in our top league - with bugger-all to speak of playing in anyone else's leagues either!

(and Beckham's team mates are not 'semi-pros' earning 12k pa either, you can count on that!)

I think the Galaxy fans have dealt with Beckham in a fickle state of mind. Any fan is right to be angry if a player says they do not want to play for any said club, but the Galaxy fans have been harsh and should be happy to have Beckham for any period of time.

Football is being played more and more in high schools and parks in the US. One of the problems is that it is virtually impossible to get a ‘soccer’ sports scholarship compared to the more traditional American sports of basketball and American football. As a scholarship represents a significant funding source to poorer and less academic students a student who is good at several sports will keep his options open until he gets older when he will probably switch to the one which gives him the best chance of a scholarship - and, until the NCAA changes the rules it aint going to be soccer. This happened recently to the son of one of the Americans I work with.

12k? dont believe that.

From US footy site:

This is the players’ guaranteed salary after nonperformance bonuses for 2009.

David Beckham $6.5 million
Landon Donovan $900,000
Edson Buddle $179,950
Chris Klein $175,000
Eddie Lewis $165,722.29
Donovan Ricketts $150,000
Omar Gonzalez $142,000
Dema Kovalenko $137,618.75
Todd Dunivant $109,974.38
Israel Sesay $102,083.33
Tristan Bowen $96,363.63
Jovan Kirovski $80,000
Alan Gordon $79,754.40
Stefani Miglioranzi $79,499.96
Sean Franklin $76,850
Mike Magee $72,500
Josh Saunders $44,473.75
Josh Wicks $42,000
Leonard Griffin $39,500
A.J. DeLaGarza $36,000
Julian Valentin $34,000
Bryan Jordan $34,000
Josh Tudela $34,000

EDIT: Reader Frank has posted a link describing the salary breakdown in the comments. You can also look at 2007’s and 2008’s league salaries. Thanks Frank!

What stands out the most to me is Sesay’s salary. Does anyone know why it is so high? It seems he has yet to fulfill his potential, which is what his salary seems to be based on.

Kirovski’s salary seems a bit low to me as well. I’d want to take about $20,000 off of Buddle’s salary and give it to Jovan.

My caretaking maternal area notes that Josh Tudela’s salary has finally been raised. For the past two years he has made $17,500 — this year he is up to $34,000.

Then it requires the same passion, commitment and faith as most of the rest of the World - as there aren't any scholarships here either.
I always found that a bit bogus, that a lug without two useful brain-cells to rub together should acquire carte-blanche degrees and letters, because they could aim a ball in the right direction.

NMH and Simster, do you like any footballers? how can a play wanting to move to a better club be welching on his commitments. Do you hate all the Albion players who joined us from a lower league club for more money?

You may be confused.
There's never a problem with a player moving from one club to another, or with clubs selling players. Ambitions exist for players and for clubs both, and clubs usually have their price when they want to collect on a player. I'm sure many a player has been sold because the club wanted to cash in, when he didn't want to move.

"Welching on commitments" is about refusing to play for a club that holds a contract, or actively touting oneself about as if a free agent when already contracted.
What you mean by "do I like any footballers" is a bit silly. I wouldn't particularly like ANYONE in a profession, whatever it is, refusing to adhere to an agreement they have signed up for.
A bit like if you joined the Armed forces, then said you won't go to fight because there's a war or a battle, and that you suddenly require more pay because of it.

This shows why Landon Donovan has been gobbing off about Becks pure jealousy as he was by far the biggest name and earner at LA Galaxy until a proper footballer came along.

Americans have never seen being stupid as something which should hold you back in life – Bush is living proof of that.

Donovan might be attempting to curry favour by 'showing his loyalty'. But anyway, he knows Beckham is a great player but let his mouth run when a mic was thrust in his mush. Since he is never going to be put under the same test as DB for money and loyalties, he'll not have to eat his own words and consider moving.

Remember, Beckham is more than a little concerned with trying to stay in the England framework and compete in the World Cup Finals, so that influences his decisions wherever he plays.
Now he's aware that appearing for the Galaxy won't get him even considered for the squad, he's itching to present his claims for a position in a place where he'll be considered.
He'll STILL have to earn that privilege, it's not simply about just turning out under the nose of Capello every week.

Don't I know it mate!
I used to sit at a table with Republicans every morning, pointing out that Bush Sr and Jr's government tenures were getting us into massive trouble.
The Trade Towers were somewhat a result of the actions of Bush Sr and the activities that led up to 'Desert Storm'.
That lot argued that Clinton was a heinous evil man for getting a blowie, and Hilary was the devil incarnate for forgiving him - while the wiping out of hundreds of thousands of poor dolts with 'BATS' weaponry was excellent work. They didn't mind that the US Government was stultified for 2 whole years over that scandal, and that bin Laden and terrorists were able to work best behind such a distraction.

With GW Bush, I was pretty strong in stating that he was a moron, and was leading them into another Vietnam - and this was me talking to a couple of blokes who had already gone to Vietnam as youths! Oh but how they'd cry and try to shout me down with screwed-up expressions and ridicule :tosser:
I'd like to ask them now, where were the WMD's?
I'd ask them if this was a perfectly winnable situation?
I'd ask again, if the end of hostilities was when Bush flew magnanimously onto a carrier to declare his grand success?
I'd ask again if it calling it a "CRUSADE" was as religiously insane as them calling it "a Jihad"?

Obama cannot now just withdraw from this, and neither can Brown. For one thing, even if they could call it quits early, it would be a total waste of several allied lads' lives and clearly a stab in the back for their families. If they continue - then we will see ever more lives taken and a long struggle to get anything lasting from it. As soon as the allies move out, the Taliban and bin Laden's lot will simply move back in.

should have maybe thought of that before going out there in the first place though.
