If it's true...it's an excellent decision in my opinion. You cannot play a player who is not match fit - it's not fair on him and it's certainly not fair on the rest of the team. And those people arguing to let him come on for 15 minutes: you seem to be saying `let him get his 100th cap, though he's not match fit and will never again get another opportunity`. So you are saying let's pick a player play for England who is not good enough or fit enough. I don't think that would be a good start for a new manager, even bearing in mind the sentimentality of it all.

Why is everyone ignoring the fact that Beckham was England's BEST PLAYER when he came on in the MOST RECENT international?

And why are the pro-Beckham lobby ignoring the fact that (much like the rest of the England team), he has been playing utter TOILET in an England shirt for years ?

Theres enough rose-tinted specs on this thread to open a branch of Specsavers.

With the greatest respect to our David, I think it would be a slur to the other 100 cap club members for him to reach the same milestone.

Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore, Sir Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright were worthy recipients but a bloke who can't tackle, can dribble past a player and doesn't know how to use a left foot isn't.

Yes probably the best crosser and free kick exponent for some time (although not on a par with Ronaldo) and currently way past his best.

Sorry David - thanks for the good times but tara

1) Agreed, and those are better reasons not to be picking him - however, the message that players who are not competing in the same league season as each other (as the North American league is out at present) are not going to qualify to play for England, wouldn't go down well in other parts of the World. Not picking internationals because their league schedule is different? hmmm. What message does THAT send?
2) Poor memory. It also belies ANY reason to EVER pick Beckham, according to those criterias. Obviously you don't like him or think he should EVER have been captain! I won't bother asking who you do rate though, as there's not one player who has been absolutely brilliant all the time..... or even most of it!
3) Well I think you are right, we ought to be looking at Euro 08, but managers and the FA are another subject - and more to the point as to why we haven't qualified. Many will point at McClaren's decisions surrounding....yes, David Beckham, as a principal clue as to how we didn't qualify. Me included. I'd say his EXCLUSION kinda underlines the flaws in your arguments, as you seem to think he's not all that - yet when he was dropped we failed even more miserably.

4) I don't expect us to win anything under Cappello either. More years of failure and disappointment ahead, and another 'Sven' situation.... except at least SGE could speak English. The only redeeming thing I see about this appointment is that it's better than the useless McClown - but that ain't saying much. No, it's actually not saying anything really.

We could go on for ever and will have to agree to differ BUT for the record on point 2. I think Beckhams performance against Greece in 2001 was world class. It may even be the best performance in an England shirt I've ever seen in my lifetime with the possible exception of Gascoigne at his peak. I just don't think he has got anywhere near that level of performance since and certainly not in major tournaments (Unfit in 2002, 2004 & not much better in 2006). I'm not syaing other players were much better but at least most have the potential to get better with a half decent coach and aren't going to go downhill quickly.

Oh and the bit about not picking players whose league schedules are different. Play in a PROPER league not the Starbucks, McDonalds Taco bell bowl or whatever its called.

That's as maybe, but he has still been one of Englands better players, particularly since McClown had to bring him back. Gerrard, Lampard, Owen and Rooney have hardly impressed in an Enland shirt over the last few years either. The point is that none of his possible repacements have ever shown themselves to be any better than Becks. SWP is definitely not the answer, the last England game I saw him play, he coulodnt even get past the pub team defenders of Estonia!

To say he shouldn't be in the squad because he's not had any games lately will, I expect, not make him much different to half the squad as there are now so few first choice first team players in the prem.

Fair enough if there was anyone better, but such is the poor quality of potential England players, he's as good as we've got!

Unlike who exactly though? he's not been great but he's been considerably better than Lampard, Gerrard, Terry, Rooney, Owen, etc and has consistently set up goals

I'm sorry but that is just patently wrong.
We havn't seen the actual squad yet, but I'd happily bet you a Curly Wurly that every single player who starts the game next Wednesday will have played for their club in the last 2 weeks.

Ashley Cole maybe. Becuase he's been too busy shagging & puking over that munter he hasn't played for Chelsea recently. After Wayne Bridge's last performance in an England shirt he can't have any compaints about being dropped.

We're getting away from the issue here. Gubbins they may have been lately for England, but THEY ARE AT LEAST PLAYING FOOTBALL AT THE MOMENT. Beckham has barely kicked a ball for THREE MONTHS.

HOW, in the name of Satans foul SCROTE, does that justify picking Beckham for next Wednesdays International, and leaving someone else out as a result ?

Maybe, but then he's not been on a three month sabbatical poncing around on Brazilian beaches or touring LA studios doing shaving foam ads.

Anyway, who's side are you on ?

;)

He's not a club and not getting a game, it's between seasons.
A world cup is normally two months after the end of the season, so by your logic we shouldn't pick any players

The reason why he isn't playing in a league is because its a MICKEY MOUSE LEAGUE. If he was to play in Say France, Spain, Germany, England or Italy he would be playing and I bet he had a chance to play in some or all of those 5 before he chased the $.

If Beckham isn't picked becuase he's not playing he has no-one to blame but himself.

If Capello had picked Beckham - who hasn't played a match for 3 months - then that is sending the message 'come'ere son, take your 100th cap and go forever'. By leaving him out but leaving the door open Capello is saying 'I pick only those who are match fit. Come back when you've had a game and if you're in form you'll get in. And you may not have to stop at 100 caps.'

Capello proved at Madrid that he doesn't shut the door permanently on someone like Beckham and will bring him back in if he's good enough and not out of sentiment or desparation

The standard of league has noting to do with your point, but to do with the weather. Well done, you've illustrated how utterly irrational your thoughts are.
From now on, could you and Easy just contribute 'I hate Beckham' to any thread with him in it and leave it at that, rather than pathetically trying to justify yourself

I wonder if he will be on standby for this...after all, we all know that premiershite managers dont like their players playing internationals and clubs have threatened to sue the FA when players have been injured in friendlies.

I can see it now...Fergussen pulls out Rooney etc, Grant, the Chelsea lot, ramos, the tottenham boys...suddenly we have no team.

I will be interested to see what Capello does with Bentley. Beckham was so desparate to play for England he worked his arse off to get fit because he loves the country and would give anything to play for England whereas, Bentley didnt give a shit about England when he was wanted by Pearce..." I am too tired" he was quoted as saying...I cant rememebr Beckham ever ducking a game

As in the reason Beckham's not played for two montsh is because US weather makes this the close season

Oh I SEE
And you'd still put him in the England team ahead of someone else who's fully match fit, having been playing in the Premiership week-in, week-out ? That still seems fairly irrational to me. Capello's clearly not sold on that particular wisdom either, and I think he's right not to be.
