Just putting the question out there
But is barnes a better player than people give him credit for not started recently and results not improving if anything we look worse in the last couple of games
If you look back to watfords 2nd goal the space two Watford players had in midfield before the ball ended up in the back of the net was dreadful no pressing up the pitch no one closing either player down do we miss a player like Barnes who's a good player without the ball (yes I know what your thinking & yes Im waiting for the jokes at that statement )
He also chips in with a few goals as well

Happy new year :drink:

Most on here support him and think he's a solid young player (just not the next Messi). It's a very over the top, vocal minority who slag him off at every opportunity and a few people who thus make tongue in cheek jokey comments too.

He's not the best striker in this league but is FAR from the worst and does a decent job out of position for Gus' tactics to work. IF Gus SLIGHTLY over-rates him BECAUSE he fits the style of play (despite not playing up top) that doesn't make him a bad player. Vast majority of fans around me at the Amex always clap and cheer him but always smile and joke about who's going to slag him off or boo first. That's the joke, not his ability but the moronic over the top opinions of him. He's average and could be liked or disliked fair enough either way, but surely not worshipped as the next coming or completely villified!

You're clearly fairly new to NSC but certain things are not allowed to be said... Nobody can criticise El-Abd, and we only loose because of our strikers who are all woeful and you cannot make positive comments about them. Barnes adds a huge amount to our team especially in a defensive outlook that we have as we try to accommodate some extremely slow players in our squad

Great post.

Good thread T soprano, we are much worse without Barnes. I would add that we look stronger with him down the middle than CMS. See Millwall away and Chelsea home.

I was excited when Lopez signed but watching on Saturday I do think Barnes would have had more influence on the game than Lopez especially closing down players like I said in opening post on Watfords 2nd goal (might not have scored the penalty though )

I agree with what you are saying but think Barnes has had a dip in form in the last 3-4 weeks, hence him not starting. Hopefully, the dip is only temporary as i think he does bring things to the team that the other midfielders don't.

He reminds me a bit of dick kyut ( probably bad spelling ) when at Liverpool people thought he was signed to score goals but he was a hard working forward player that closes players down and tracks back, chipped in with a few goals as well
Trouble is Barnes is the boo boy and People that have booed him want him to fail to be proved right in their eyes he can do no right which I feel might have spilled from the terraces into barnes mindset and affected his performances on the pitch

I think he is very good at the role he is asked to play, I suspect many fans are clueless as to what that role is and I have to admit sometimes so am I.

I think thats a decent comparison. I'm not a Barnes fan but his certainly looked hungry when coming off the bench in the last two games. I think the problem has been Poyet's tactics in the past two games rather than missing Barnes.

Particular dropping Hoskins after the Forest game where although he missed three decent chances, I was starting to see a player regain his match sharpness and he should have been persisted with him as I think he will start to score given time in the team.

Lopez was disappointing on Saturday which was a bit odd as in the previous game I thought he'd finally settled in.

As for Barnes, he made a difference when he came on and when he plays in that more central role I think he could actually be better as a box to box midfielder. He defends well, tracks back and tackles, plus (regardless of what his myopic detractors say) he is capable of some really good link up play.

The problem is that when he hits a patch of bad form, Gus refuses to drop him and that makes it easy for people to slag him off.

One other thing, I met him the other day at the kids do, and (again contrary to all this bad attitude bollocks) he was a really nice guy, incredibly polite and really making an effort with the kids. This reiterates what my missus said to me previously, as the players use the Virgin Active gym, and she reckons he's the politest one of them all (and he's not even the one she fancies).

That's why I started the thread I've not always been his biggest fan and sometimes wonder his best position but when a player gets dropped and results & performances get worse you start thinking maybe he does more than people think

I would always start him ahead of Lopez who is distinctly average, though can take a pen!

Barnes movement in terms of finding the soft under-belly of teams is superb, similar to Lampard in some ways, the trouble is his finishing is 10 times worse. Defensively he offers more than any other attacking player in the squad.

Barnsey passed the ball Directly Forward at Pace twice within a few minutes of coming on both times our "f***ing useless" centre forward CMS got (or at least looked like getting) past the last man. He also got into positions in the box where he looked like he might score if a few balls had been delivered with any pace! We just don't play with any pace.

Apologies, didn't read this before my last post Kuyt is a good call.

I actually disagree though in terms of form. For me against Charlton and Millwall he changed the game when he came on, as we had more options and more presence in the last third.
