All gone too far and for Wolves to get fined £100000 for that is a joke. To me homophobia is an obvious gay in a public place getting abuse. Not a few chants at a football game. I remember a club getting fined for fans chanting at a Pompey player he only signed because of the sailors. Maybe I am wrong but at the time found it amusing.

When I hear those chants at games I sometimes wonder if there's a young away fan in that crowd who's questioning their own sexuality, maybe he's there with his dad, and hearing his dad joining in.

Thing is, it’s all a personal threshold, insults aimed towards me don’t bother me in the slightest, I work with the public and if I get called a **** I laugh it off, some of my colleagues book off work and go home. Homosexual related chants only bother me to the extent of boredom and Leeds fans who like to wear pink cowboy hats etc just lack imagination and are attention seekers. Songs like “When Wilfred Zaha dies….” don’t impact on my life, I’ve long since given up apologising for the actions of others, it just make the perpetrators look stupid. I’m happy my 14 year old son shares my opinion on shit football songs.

I agree with you actually. Ironically in light of the context its most often used by people with no actual sense of humour and often as a cover for actual bullying behaviour.

This is pretty much it. And the people are usually large groups of loud guys laughing at anything and everything people say. I recently saw Peter Crouch on the tv and it was exactly like this, he said something like 'I was playing golf, I dont even like golf' and everyone just pissed themselves with laughter. Give me a fish pun any day. But as you say, it can be a cover for something a lot worse.

As an aside, what do people like about Peter Crouch? His brand of 'humour' seems popular.

You say to some it's homophobic and to others it is banter, but the law, as it stands, does state it is hate crime.
Bullying at its mildest and very offensive at its worst.
Remember that football crowds also have children present, and I have heard and heard witnesses saying children have been targeted when with their fathers. Not so funny then, eh?

The late Sarah Watts used to collate chants for the FA whenever we played away games, so they could see the extent of the abuse. Man City, and Chelsea also get homophobic abuse.

I have also posted this before, but a friend of mine, once a season ticket holder, will not come to the Amex because of homophobic abuse from Brighton fans.

Many years ago, defenders of the Sun Page 3 'soft porn' images called the content 'just a bit of fun', claiming there were no 'victims' and people, particularly women who complained had humour bypasses.
I think today the same goes for football 'banter' which generally (not always) represents an excuse for foul mouthed trolling. Hate is probably too strong, but deep disrespect and unfunny negative rudeness is a blight on the great sport we love.

I was trying to get a soundbox to work on my tv this morning and was unfortunate enough to have Jeremy Vine’s programme come on whilst I was doing it. They were doing a bit on footballers to Saudi Arabia which was quite interesting. They had a guy who was very anti and didn’t like football. He had apparently been taken to a game and whilst talking about LGBT issues said that he was shocked to hear the fans chanting “the referee is a f***ing queer” . I have NEVER heard that chanted at a game, does it happen?

I’ve never met a fan who’s actually offended by any of this type stuff.

I think the fines are football (specifically the FA’s) way of showing they care without actually caring or making change. Much like the taking the knee, no to racism campaigns, rainbow captains armbands, rainbow laces weekend etc. In my eyes these are all token gestures by the authorities and don’t make any difference to the players, or more importantly to the experience of the fans.

Found that to be a nicely structured quiz, and easy to answer. I went for all the 'chuck them out' options, and these easily mapped to the follow ups on education and whatnot.

I would imagine that in 10 years time my attitude would have shifted towards the prosecution options.

Perhaps by then, if I'm still alive, I may have stopped calling people ****s on NSC. I'm not a stranger to being abusive, and perhaps I have some things to learn.

I do wish people would stop provoking me by acting like ****s, though.

Anything that can be considered as "abusive" should be dealt with. IMO not with prosecution unless it is a repeat offender, entry into the stadium is now registered so we know who is gaining access.
kick them out if they do it and if they don't learn then a harsher punishment should be sought.

Banter is only banter if all parties are getting involved. If the person/group that is on the "receiving end" of the chants is not including themselves then it is actually down to their perception of the chants, not those that are doing the chanting
