I picked the wrong week to drive from Sussex to Scotland.

Started the day with just under half a tank, 7 hours later I'm in Manchester for an over night stay and £119 lighter to brim the tank at Costco ready for the next leg to another Costco in Edinburgh to brim again, I'm hoping to get away with one fill up while in Scotland but doubt I'll get much change from £350 once I'm done. That should cover me for about 1800 miles.

Those types aren’t affected and probably won’t ever be. Hard pressed families, their kids already use buses and always have. Huge mass of other mums moaning about petrol but they are nearly all driving huge suvs, brand new or nearly, typically range rovers. Hundreds and hundreds of people have these now round our way and they ain’t dropping off at private schools either. Discoveries etc are way more common than Fords etc. So my thinking is, if you can afford to taxi young jade or jackson around in a £60-100k car then you really can afford to fill it up. And should probably just shut up about doing so!

I’m not a currency trader. Are you ? The Euro had a full blown crisis not so many years ago. You are conflating correlation and causation and forgetting the volatile nature of fx markets.

At the moment, we are paying about £1.15 per litre, which although cheap by UK standards, is about 80% more than this time last year. Can I blame Thatcher and Brexit for that too?

That seems a very fair point. The origins of the energy price surge seems to have been the pent up demand post Covid restriction lifting. There has been a global competition to satisfy demand then along comes Ukraine.

Very good point. Isn’t 55 mph the most fuel efficient speed to drive at ? If people aren’t doing that then they really have nothing to complain about. I think 60 is the optimal speed for electric cars.

This is not just a problem in the UK, Derv prices have rocketed across Europe.
As a lorry drivrer it is frightening, however in Europe each country give haulage companies rebates, however despite RHA and FTA calls for the same to happen here the Government wont.
If im lucky i can get away with filling up twice a week, 2 derve tanks on unit 1 holding 500ltrs the other 350ltrs. 12MPG.

The cost of Adblue has also increased £1.12 per ltr.

Cheers, the resaon i went with 56MPH was that HGV vehucles are governed at that speed, and 3 years ago there was a big surge in getting the ones limited to 50/52 MPH reset to 56.
I suppose its about the driver and how they drive day to day, however seeing some of the driving standards now it makes me wonder how people get a licence, or infact how people manage to fail the test.

They need to slash fuel duty and VAT on fuel urgently. Maybe at some point, if that doesn't work, consider a negative duty ie subsidy.

They have to get it back somehow and that seems the easy target.
Was in Canada recently and you should hear the uproar as it's got to about £1.40 a litre, it was their main news story when I was out there.

Is it all a con job Governments making a killing on fuel duty to recover covid losses?

Is that the fuel duty they've just recently cut? Likely there'll be fewer litres sold now, as people think twice about usng the car for some journeys, so less fue duty paid because of that too.

Sorrento petrol and diesel prices are over 2 Euros a litre, so much the same as the UK. Most seem to ride scooters and motorbikes like nutters though. You cross on a pedestrian crossing at your own risk
