Perhaps that is why he is or was a highly paid manager and you are a 'layman'. When going a man down that is the obvious tactic to try to get a goal back and also catch the opposition offside when they attack, unfortunately with a player like Saurez in their side it didnt work but had to be tried, There was very little other tactic he could use as they were losing and to get behind the ball was pointless as it wouldnt have brought back a goal and they would have lost anyway.

Nope, sorry, could not disagree more. It should have been (a) sit deep, damage limitation, soak up pressure and try to stretch the pitch and counter-attack or nick goals from set pieces; OR (b) push up, play offside, and use your midfield and attack to press Liverpool high up the pitch to try and win the ball back in their half and hopefully create some chances in open play. They did neither, they just sat on the half way line, giving the Scouse midfield all the time in the world, not even attempting to play the forwards offside, and quite frankly Liverpool were taking the piss by the end, it was laughably easy. You could've put me in the Liverpool central midfield and I would've been able to chip a couple over the top for Suarez/Sterling, who are going to beat Dawson & Capoue 100 times out of 100 in a foot race.

And considering you take most of your footballing knowledge from footballrumours, I'm quite happy to agree to disagree ta, as out of you and I, I know which one is the bigger layman.

In the last 4 seasons Spurs have finished 4th twice and 5th twice. The last time they had that level of consistency near the top of the table was in the period 1961-65. This suggests Levy knows what he's doing. To be fair, I think he just wants to be in the mix for Champions League.

The problem is the game moves on and my ideas now may or may not work but I still think that your idea is wrong as damage limitation doesnt enter in to it when you are playing a team that you are competing with for a league position and losing, it is a must to try to turn the game around and win when only 2 down.

I apologise if you took my post personally, I didn't mean to word it as an attack, it's just that in my experience I have found that I disagree with your POV on almost everything football related. That is not personal - football is a game of opinions (to use a cliché), and you are more than entitled to yours whether I think it's nonsense or not, just as you are entitled to disagree with mine. However I won't be changing my mind because you got a coaching badge 40 years ago. As you say, the game moves on.

In modern football I don't believe you can be as naïve at the top level, to expect to defend successfully with a very high line and a man disadvantage, against a side whose main attacking threat is pace over the top. Whilst it was 11v11 there may have been an argument to be made to stick to their guns, IF they were pressing high up the pitch, operating an offside trap and had Lloris playing the sweeper-keeper role he's been described as. But they weren't playing offside and they weren't pressing, they were stuck in no-mans land doing nothing other than watching as Liverpool got in behind time and time again. Whether you are competing with a team in the league is almost irrelevant, if at 0-2 you take sit deep to stock for 5/10 minutes, regroup and try to grind out a goal or two on the counter, you might get away with it. But against a top side you can't play into their hands so impotently as Spurs did in that game, because they'll pick you off for fun. They didn't try to take the game to Liverpool in an all-guns-blazing, 'all in or bust' fashion. They didn't try to win. They just froze, rolled over and succumbed to a humiliating thrashing at home by refusing to adapt to the situation of the game.

Again sorry that my post came across a bit blunt, it wasn't intentional.

No offense taken and as you say it is all about opinions which is why some managers are successful and others not so, but it at least gives us room and ammunition for a discussion, which I am always prepared to have and quite often can see the other persons point of view, which I do incidentally with yours, although I dont agree with your analysis.

Soldado is a quality striker, he's just being played in the wrong system. As are a lot of their other new recruits.

Can't really blame them for sacking him but questions should be asked as to why they appointed him in the first place. AVB has shown little during his career so far to suggest he has any talent as a football manager.
