Delighted to report Attwell is on VAR duties at Villa Park tomorrow. Let's not forget when he was on VAR duties there previously he decided that number 22 wasn't interfering with play and a clear foul on Solly was too far back to intervene despite directly leading to a goal. Let's hope there are no 50/50 decisions tomorrow otherwise we all know which side he'll come down on.View attachment 194284
Nothing worse than a cheat officiating at the highest level , doesn`t say much for Howard Webb either . So long as individuals like this are in charge our game will suffer , they are supposed to be there for the benefit of the game not their own self interest .

There is no anti-Brighton conspiracy. The Villa fans seemed to be fuming at a number of decisions that went against them.
Perhaps not on-field, but the correlation in Attwell’s involvement and controversial decisions in our games is stark.

Pawson, I thought had a relatively reasonable game.

I’m convinced that Attwell has got it in for us.

His wrong decisions have a noticeable impact on our seasons. No other ref gets anywhere near his level of mistreatment to us.

I don’t want to see him anywhere near one of our games again. I hope he suffers the same fate as Coote.

“In February 2012, Attwell was demoted from the list of Select Group Referees and returned to Football League duty on the National List. The move was said to come by mutual consent. Professional Game Match Officials Limited general manager Mike Riley backed Attwell to improve as a referee and return to the top level.[11]

Attwell returned to officiating in the Premier League in October 2014.[12] He was promoted to the list of Select Group Referees in March 2016.” Wiki

He needs a permanent demotion!

ESPNs VAR expert (who’s usually very charitable towards EPL referees) say VAR should never be getting involved there and it was an incorrect intervention. he also points out several identical situations this season where a penalty wasn’t given. but it’s attwell refereeing us, so it’s given. obviously.

I can only recall one maybe two incidents where a ref has stuck with his decision in the Pl….no balls!

as has been said took ages to decide….clear and obvious pfffft
I can remember 2 involving us and one of them went our way (Villa I think during COVID) and one went against (Dunky's penalty v Brentford last season)

Yep, it's the definitive "VAR shouldn't get involved - high bar" example. I wouldn't have expected it to be overturned if the ref had somehow seen it at the time but there is absolutely no way Attwell should have had anything to do with it. Unfortunately we all know what happens consistently whenever he gets involved in one of our games. As I said on the match thread, Pawson's body language from a few feet away in the away end showed he didn't believe it was a pen but was eventually convinced by the endless slow motion replays.

But Pawson could have stuck with his onfield decision.
They never do, though. The on-pitch monitor exercise is a complete charade. What's the point?

And Martinez miles from his goal shouting in his ear.

Completely agree. Why call the ref over to a monitor for some infringements and not others? VAR can rule on offside remotely, but penalties have to be decided on field? Why?

Keith Hackett on 5Live yesterday was saying that football and VAR need to adopt the same process as rugby and the TMO. Everything should be discussed openly and transparently. The crowd, players and media should be fully aware of what is being discussed and the reasoning given behind any decision made. As it is right now, the vibe seems very much to be protecting the officials rather than being focussed on reaching the correct decision, even if it highlights poor initial calls by officials. Crucially, the dialogue needs to be fully open and made available in real time.
