Attendence of 4,395 ? It was actually LOWER

I've always been under the misapprehension that the attendence figures are calculated by the number of mugs (sorry, FANS) actually passing through the turnstile on the day. The little counter on the turnstile made me assume this. However, it has been brought to my attention today that attendences at games are actually calculated based on tickets SOLD for the game, and always assume full 100% attendence from every season ticket holder.

So the fact I bought my ticket for last nights game in March of last year (with my season ticket renewal) means that I would have been counted as one of the 4,395 in the crowd last night, whether I'd gone to the game (as I did), or stayed at home in front of the telly to get bored off my tits by Liverpool.

I dunno whether everyone already knew this, but I have to say, its something of a revelation to me. And it leaves me wondering what the ACTUAL attendence of last nights game was.

???

Does that mean there could of been less than 35 Cheltenham fans ???

It's round about now that the ol' VAT fiddle insinuations usually start surfacing

I do not think there is any question of a VAT fiddle as I woukl assume that it is an agreed % between the VAT office and the Football Clubs/League, in much the same way as the varying figures are agreed in other trades and professions.

But it's not that often that a sell out will have the attendance of the capacity, due to seats being unused because of segregation.

Not an issue at Withdean though - there is no segregation any more, away fans have their own seperate stand.

I know that, I was just saying.

but how do they know that its a season ticket holder going through a turnstyle?

potentially there's double counting here?

They count tickets sold.
The turnstile counters are a complete irrelevence - they don't use them. PERIOD.

When paying input VAT, assuming admission tickets are subject to VAT, which I am not sure, all tickets sold would be liable for the payment of this VAT irrespective of whether a STH goes to the game or not because they have paid for their ticket. The only other possibility, which again I am not sure of is, that this input VAT is paid when the money is actually received for the tickets in either March, April or May.

Its output VAT btw, the club will almost certainly have to pay VAT when the ticket is sold irrespective of the fact that it covers the who season

I know for a fact the gate was wrong last night, because Superwife and I were there, but no-one tore off the stubbs on our tickets.

Remember the last few seasons at the Goldstone, and the last ever game there in particular?

People were very suspicious about the difference between the officially published gate figure that day, and the crowd as it appeared to the naked eye.

There were rumblings for a long period of time- entirely unsubstantiated, I should add at this point- that individuals within the club were being creative with the crowd figures.

Including the season ticket holders is standard practice, hence the figure for the boycotted Goldstone game against Mansfield was several hundred higher than the real figure inside the ground.

Its probably much easier for our club there is no entry on the gate, VAT will be accounted on all tickets sold, whether or not the purchaser attends the game so attendance figures will have no bearing on VAT

:lolol: they don't count the paper stubs, Phil, it's a bit more technical than that!

(they have a midget sitting underneath each turnstile, counting the number of feet that go past, and writing it on a chalkboard, and then they add up all the midgets' chalk marks, and divide that by two).

The last ever game at the Goldstone was all ticket Edna. I still have the old ticket stub (framed on my wall with several other significant ones) *sad*

I dunno what the official attendence figure was for that game, but then if Belotti told me what day it was, I'd have checked a calender.

So long since I have done VAT return but isnt the money coming in ie revenue liable for input Vat and the money that you spend on expenses etc liable for output. Or have I got it the wrong way round.
