[Albion] At what point should Potter be sacked?

I'm gobsmacked that there are genuinely people that want potter to go. We're playing the best team football I've ever seen in 45 years of watching. Sometimes when the opposition are closing one of our players down, the way we escape with 2 or 3 quick passes makes me purr. We are creating loads of chances and not conceding many. No-one has given us a schooling. We have a host of young players learning their craft and Lallana and now Welbeck to guide them. Some of the interplay between the front three looked very promising. We are a few goals away from being an extremely good team. Sacking Potter would be madness.

A lot of the football has been pretty - but this is a results based sport - and this team is not set up for a relegation dog-fight. They have to put a few good results together sooner rather than later otherwise it is going to be a difficult season.

Some people on here have said that if the club is relegated Potter should be kept as manager - but it has to be remembered that it is very unlikely that Dunk, White, Lampety, Lallana, Bissouma, Trossard, Wellbeck, or even Maupay, Alzate, Connolly, Webster and Veltman would be willing to stay with the club in the Championship. Relegation would gut the squad and require a major re-build.

So engrossed in the US elections I completely forgot about our game!! In fairness, I’m pretty tired too.

What a let off though. Sounds an appalling match. Anyway, doesn’t surprise me. Surprises me even less that the usual suspects still have their rose tints on. Get the bingo card out. Nil nil at home to bottom Burnley and let me guess, plenty to be positive about yes? :lolol: Are we still learning?! :ORef rubbish, VAR rubbish, keeper had a worldie, record number of times hit the post...:bla:

You forgot to add no luck

So if you had your way who would you have as a new manger?

I honestly can’t believe some of the stuff I read, as if we have some right to be ripping up trees. We have never been a top half team in our entire existence, we start playing some nice football and all a sudden we need to be doing better and need a change.

****s me right off if I’m honest. Imagine if Potter said you know what I could do with out all the shit and just walked away, I’d be pretty pissed with some of our fans.

All he has to do is avoid logging into NSC to live in blissful ignorance of some of the more extreme views. It’s one of the advantages of playing games behind closed doors.

I know it makes fans twitchy, but you don't have to get a big proportion of your points early on, lots of teams improve as the season goes on. Even them up the road we're pointless after 7 games and were fine.

And please indicate where I suggested that Potter should be sacked?

In fact far, far too many clubs are trigger happy when it comes to sacking a manager.

I honestly can’t believe some of the stuff I read, as if we have some right to be ripping up trees. We have never been a top half team in our entire existence, we start playing some nice football and all a sudden we need to be doing better and need a change.
Again - where in all the 1,500 odd posts that I have made on this forum is the slightest suggestion that I think Brighton are a top half team?

Yes the team is playing 'some nice football' - but the criticism is not about needing 'to be doing better' - it is about getting the results that are needed to ensure survival. Drawing at home to the likes of WBA and Burnley are the type of results that get you into serious trouble at the wrong end of the table.

****s me right off if I’m honest. Imagine if Potter said you know what I could do with out all the shit and just walked away, I’d be pretty pissed with some of our fans.
Managers have always got criticism from fans - to do the job you need a very thick skin otherwise you won't last pissing time - and they generally get very well paid for it (even down the league pyramid).

I know it makes fans twitchy, but you don't have to get a big proportion of your points early on, lots of teams improve as the season goes on. Even them up the road we're pointless after 7 games and were fine.
It is not about failing to get points early on per-say - it about what other clubs are doing as well. Brighton have played 8 games - but haven't a win in 6 - and have drawn games they should have and needed to win and lost games they should have got a draw from. On top of that - there is a points gap opening up above Brighton - now at 4 points. If Brighton fail to win at Villa - that gap could easily be 7 points as all the teams directly above could conceivably win in two weeks. Lose at home to Liverpool and it could be 9/10 points - and then there is a massive mountain to climb to avoid the relegation dogfight. Then its about battling with WBA, Fulham, Sheff Utd and Burnley and at least the last two, in my view, are much better equipped for such a battle.

Now Brighton could well go on a run - but 4 wins in 26 games does not bode well and after Villa and Liverpool, Brighton have some very big games in December - against top half teams - but also against Fulham, Sheff Utd and West Ham. Unless Potter gets this turned around by Boxing Day it could turn out to be a very long and stressful season.

Me Too - I totally forgot all about it and engrossed in the ''Trump Downfall''

As for sacking Potter - Can't sack him. Still clear of the Relegation Zone and there are about 4 worse teams so staying up shouldn't be a problem. So I think he has to stay.

That said - Watching from the position I am in. I saw the same tide of opinion turn on CH gradually the way it seems to be turning on here and it will grow until results starts to turn in his favour. It is not nice to witness because I think Potter is doing a decent job with the standard of player he has at his disposal. I just think the Fans Expectations have been raised and when that Genie is out of the bottle it is difficult to get it back in.

The good thing about the up and coming games is that he has the International break coming up and the team often seems to have an upturn in results when there is a bit of a break in proceedings. So that may happen again after the International Break and if it does then he has enough good grace in the bank with the fans to weather this due to the attacking style of play which a lot of fans like.

Make no mistake though. Results are what will keep him in the job and not pretty football. So as soon as he picks up points again all this talk of sacking will be abated.

One reason the genie is out the bottle is because bloom took the lid off and mention top 10 regardless off how long . We can all say something stupid like that even deal boy this time next year ?

Reading this thread makes me quite sad. So many really don’t appreciate how good we’ve got it imo.

Frustration levels through the roof but I haven’t walked away from watching a game this season that I didn’t enjoy, apart from the dire 2nd half against WBA.

8 games in and some of you really really want to sack the manager who gave us our best ever finish and points total and has us playing the best football ever seen from an Albion team. We are going through a bad patch and it may get worse, who knows. But sacking a manager 8 games into a season is madness.

It does interest me how he guided Swansea to 12th , the same Swansea who then made the play offs and now in the top 6 again.

Be interesting the next few games

"Record points tally". Litterally all he had to do was beat our first season in the prem tally with the same squad plus another £70 million chucked at it. It's a 'well done, pat on the back' achievement, the squad had stopped playing for the previous manager and needed a reboot.

Best football ever? If you like passing with no end product and little width, perhaps.

He's alright, done an ok job, but for every OTT post saying how shit Potter is there's 3 or 4 saying he's amazing.

Reality is he's somewhere in between.

If the board sanction the acquisition of a couple of £30 Million plus transfers for strikers, and we continue to fail to score goals, he should be sacked. If he's forced to stick with what he's got, because financial stability of the club is considered paramount, then he should stay, and we should consider ourselves lucky to have him at the helm.

I don’t see the point in sacking a manager unless there’s a better alternative lined up. So, who’s available within our budget that will play equally entertaining football but somehow get the same players to do the final bit and stick the ball in the net? Eddie Howe would be the only obvious candidate - but his teams couldn’t defend at all and relied on better strikers than we have. There’s been definite progression in terms of style from Hughton - even if the end results currently are similar. If our young players continue to develop in the next year as they have since Potter took charge, then the future looks good. And, if we can’t wait that long, maybe he needs to be provided with better players now, rather than carrying the can.

I have asserted before that prior to his appointment Potter's reputation was largely manufactured than reflected reality. In Sweden he was supposed to have brought a small club into the top division without any money - yet the chairman of the club was convicted for fraud for secretly funneling money into the club. His reputation was based primarily on one win over Arsenal. At Swansea he took a team that was gutted to mid-table in the Championship - a decent job but nothing really to write home about.

Now - this does not mean that he is not a good manager - the jury is still out on that one. The problem I see is that Potter's teams play a certain way - it nice passing football - but it also looks like the other managers in the PL have figured out how to play against Brighton. To me 4 wins in 26 games is a demonstration of this fact. The question now is Potter capable of adapting - this is a decent squad and has improved again this season - time will tell if he can maximise their potential and get some results over the next two months.

As every professional says, it really is fine margins at this level.

Over the last year we have got to a point where we seem to be able to dominate fairly consistently in the vast majority of games, regardless of the opposition. And (hoping I'm not jinxing it), without leaving ourselves overly susceptible to a fast break on turnover of possession. If we are going to score more, it's simple. We need certain players to take more chances and commit more forward offensively.

Doing this whilst maintaining the domination and protecting against a fast break is the key. In our case I believe, there is nothing fundamentally missing from the coaching or players. If there was, it would be obvious by now. We are still putting out very young teams that will continue to improve.

It really is very fine margins and a very small percentage improvement can give huge rewards.

Sorry, no.

Maupay had a goal a game to start the first four games of the season. Since then he had the ball passed to him by Lallana when anyone with a reasonable grasp of the game knew Lallana should have shot against WBA, was then dropped for a reason that none of us know before being restored today and clearly not giving much of a shite. So much for emotional intelligence.

However, our best chances today were blown by Welbeck and Lamptey.

We are over elaborate in both boxes and that is the coach's fault. End of.

Totally disagree with this. Maupay has been so poor is hugely responsible for our current situation.

- missed an absolute sitter against Crystal Palace. In fact didn’t even get the shot away. At a crucial time in the match as well.
- missed two huge chances against WBA.
- then behaves so badly he is dropped for the next game.
- he was dreadful against Burnley, wrong decision making on so many occasions.
- while we are at it his rush of blood against Man United cost us a point.

Four goals from 8 is okay but two were penalties, neither of which he won. Before then his record was 2 goals this calendar year.

He’s not good enough at the moment and needs a break from this first team. Hopefully Trossard takes his place.

Regarding the just 4 wins in 26 games, I was wooed by that poor stat too. Compelling isn’t?

Then I looked at Hassenhuttl and this time last year he had 1 win in 19, including some hidings. Now look at his team fly.

Potter may or may not prove good enough, I’m not sure either way, I can’t see how anyone can know at this moment, but the Hassenhuttl comparison is worth noting.

Absolutely this. Great post.

We haven’t invested sufficiently in our forward options for the past few years and the reality is it is showing on the pitch.

Our first choice striker is a championship player trying to step up and he’s currently not at the required level. To back him up we have two young strikers one of whom has never played a game in this country and Welbeck who I think will come good but is miles short of match sharpness. So much so he didn’t even start when we didn’t have Maupay or Connolly available.

I understand we are being financially prudent due to the impact of the pandemic but there is a price to pay on the pitch. Until Potter is given the appropriate tools for the job to call for him to be sacked is unfair.
