I haven't read all the posts but the pastor for the school said he supported the second amendment and if the students were armed they could have protected themselves. Unbelievable.

No idea what the answer can be, has it all gone too far? Either way, another number of innocent people have died at the hands of a mad man and his arsenal. RIP.

Arm hundreds of Testosterone/Estrogen raging kids with weapons and see what happens.
I'd imagine many of the boys would want to see if their Call of Duty training pays off in real life.
It'd be Return of the Lord of the Flies.

Worthing
Although the States has the highest gun ownership per capita it isn't even in the top 20 when it comes to murder rates. Some of those countries though are practically third world and its gang/drug related wars. What America does seem to have though is a monopoly on school and college massacres.

Are you embarrassed when you read back through your posts on here?
This is probably the most attention you've got on the board since joining in January.

Yes I'm really embarrassed. What was I thinking blaming the gun traders and manufacturers?

Like you say, 'Call of duty' must be playing its part.

PS I've just read through my posts. Which of the posts should I actually be embarrassed by?

A re-post would be appreciated.

Not quite.

The USA is 15th in the World, after mostly South American/African (many 3rd world) nations with huge drug/gang/social problems; (Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, Swaziland, Guatemala, Colombia, South Africa, Panama, Mexico and so on).

If you look at the list by modern/wealthy/western countries, the USA is top by a long way.

You have a point on that many factors feed into the gun culture, gun traders being a part of that. But attitudes and the idea of entitlement to own weapons in the US has to change more than anything.

I can understand , not agree with, but understand why kids in a Favella in Brazil feel the need to own a gun but mental health and attitude must play a part when a well -to -do, well educated guy in a developed country feels the need to kill people for no reason.

It does usually appear to be kids from non ghetto environments who have this propensity to be selfish ***** in this sort of event. Selfishness is the only reason I can think of for it. Me Me Me!!

I saw Obama’s speech last night and he was clearly very shaken and very angry. He really laid into the politicians and the NRA (without naming them) saying the inevitability of future similar incidents and the lack of political action is no longer acceptable.

One of the New York tabloids carried this cover this morning which is very stark

and the op-ed carried a similar message to Obama’s speech, accusing the Republicans and the NRA of having blood on their hands; the Republicans by continuing to block gun control legislation and basically being in the pocket of the NRA and the NRA for continually wanting more guns. It added that even most NRA members are in favor of sensible reform such as background checks.

But I think, sadly, Man of Harvey’s comment is correct - if the death of 23 children does not create change then nothing will, two of the American women I work with said the same thing

From the BBC...

Named as Chris Harper Mercer, the gunman opened fire on Thursday inside a classroom at Umpqua Community College.
Officials said on Friday that he had body armour, three pistols, a rifle and five extra magazines of ammunition.

I recall a Not The Nine O'clock News sketch where everyone wore their own nuclear weapeon co it made them feel 'safer'. No less ridiculous than US gun laws. This crap aside, most gun deaths in the US are accidental and at home. Stistically if you increase armament proliferation more people die. Simple. As is the solution.

So why? The assimilation of precedent as the norm. Conservativism favours the norm, cos change is 'bad'. And all of us are conservativismists, nothing to do with political afiliation That's why the US will never get rid of guns, and why we will never reintroduce the death penalty. Different issues, and despite the rights and wrongs of each, the decision is taken for the wrong reason (fear of change).

We are not yet ready to be mature citizens.

The gunman was British by birth.
