I doubt you’ll get very far with legal action sadly, assuming they were all SIA badged if you were refusing to leave the train they can use reasonable force to do so.

That said they’ve clearly not followed their own rules so I’d be taking this up with Southern, providing them all the evidence and see what they say

The club won’t care, they’ll say it’s for you to take up with Southern

Might be worth taking this up with supporter services. This is the ambiguous guidance provided by the club.

"This applies for most services between 11.30am and 9pm for a 3pm kick-off and between 4.15pm and midnight for a 7.45pm kick-off."

I have also been told by the barrier operator at Shoreham that he will let me through this time, but tickets are only valid 2 hours before kick off and it is up to me if I get challenged. We pay for a service, I am really not sure why the onus is then on the paying customer to interpret how the rules work and to accept having to travel on rammed services with insufficient capacity.

Looks like it's worth taking a screen shot of the 3.3 hours before and 4 hours after to produce - along with ticket - just in case.

Cup games aren't usually covered by the travel scheme, but when we played Palace in the cup 'x' years ago, it was clear that travel was included. But it hadn't been properly communicated to station staff by Southern. I got on at Shoreham. The barriers were open and when I was then challenged to show my ticket, and I showed him, my match ticket, I was told travel wasn't included and I had to buy a ticket. I told him he was wrong and just made my way to the opposite platform. My son and a mate were also going and his mate was forced to buy a ticket. We exchanged messages on route and I sent evidence of the free travel. When he got to Brighton he went to the ticket office and got a refund. Brighton station then called the other station to let them know fans could travel.

The OP raises an interesting point about free travel and if nothing else, the rules need to be confirmed and all staff at stations in the free travel area, along with bus drivers, maybe need reminding.

Still in Brighton
If I was faced with three of those "types" (that are often in this job because they're just "itching" to remove someone physically) and it was getting close to becoming physical - even if I knew I was right - I'd get off. And simply get on the next train. I'm surprised they didn't fine you, which happened to me*, but it looks like they wanted the physical confrontation and you didn't back down. While I have sympathy for you maybe next time recognise your situation and just get off.

* not re an Albion game and I later got a full refund.

Reasonable force would be one or two people. Three is excessive.

OP, if I was you, I’d definitely contact Southern and state the details of the situation.

edit to add, tell Southern you are reporting the assault to BTP.

This is a big PR problem for the Albion.
The club continually encourage fans to hang around after the game as long as possible to reduce the transport queues.
The new Fan Zone will only increase the number of fans delaying their departure.
Reading about this episode people with connecting trains out of Brighton station are going to be nervous of falling foul of time limits.

Hopefully some common sense training is available for the over zealous station security staff who may well be frustrated with their jobs, wanting to create a situation to justify their employment when a more gentle touch is required.

Some reassurance for late departing fans needed PB!

And, ok, I'll fess up. I've even flashed a random 'matchday ticket' on my phone to a bus driver when we're playing away from home. Never had a dickie bird yet. If I do, I'll just plead ignorance and cough up accordingly.

I probably deserve to be assaulted, to be fair.
If you get caught show them the NSC match game post which always has someone saying what time they will be at the Amex 😂

I know Arse took about 5 mins per corner, but there only was a total of 10 mins stoppages, so the game must’ve finished sometime around 7-25 to 7-30. As such I wouldn’t pursue the claim that you were within the 3 hour limit too much.
I am sure that I have seen the 3 hour rule, which is in place to stop folk using it to travel around in town or wherever, as some posters have admitted to. The club pays transport operators for travel to and from the match, and 3 hours is surely long enough for the local area. You were over the time limit, and thus they were within their rights to stop you. yes, 10 minutes as you claim, seems OTT but the line has to be drawn somewhere, or, life being as it is, people will abuse it left right and centre, if there is financial gain to be made. We were probably between 5 and 10 minutes away from the stadium walking towards the ambulance station, and having stayed to the final whistle, when the 7.35 train to Ore passed us, so you were probably best part of 20 minutes over. This does not excuse an assault, if this is indeed an accurate description of what happened,, but had you owned up to being wrong, or listened to what they were saying, then perhaps the issue might have ben settled more reasonably?

Maybe have a look at post #16

Easy, are you a bad person?
