f***ing hell, calm down people. He played well tonight, and scored a cracking first goal.

I'm not going to slag him off like I did last year, as if nothing else, he does seem to have upped his work rate this year, but imo he is still looking well short of the others, and CMS is in a completely different class. His first touch is still poor, stills goes down far to obviosuly and easily.

Three from four looks great, and is, but two of them have been pens (maybe if CMS was there against Gillingham and not with Scotland) CMS would have three goals, and AShley would have scored his first of the season tonight. Can't make a accurte comment on tonights pen from the angle we were at, but it didn't look bottom corner to me, and the one against Gillingham was perfect for the keeper if he had gone the right way as well.

So fair play to Ashley's start, and I f***ing hope it continues, but lets not carried away after 4 games because take away the pens, he's scored one cracker in four, and looked average in the other three.......

CMS on the other hand..... f***ing hell. Give me three of him up front, and we'll have teams refusing to play us and handing us the points!!! What a player!!!

Agree or disagree, I really don't care, but try and discuss it without ****ing me off, or I'll just **** you start back, but that's my opinion and I'm not going to change it because he had one good game, and I KNOW I am not alone!!

I agree with Mr Burns. Like he say's there is an obvious gap in skill/pace between CMS and Barnes, I don't think many people would disagree???

However, Barnes is full of passion and really seems to throw everything he can at the game! He should be close finished article in a couple of seasons, but at the moment he still lacks experience imho and can't help but feel he is out of his depth at times.

Am not knocking the guy as he has scored some vital goals for us, but calling it how I see it and have spoken with fans who think the same.

Anyways, up the Albion! Onwards and upwards!!

Fact is Ashley Barnes has come on in leaps and bounds over the close season and into the new season.

I think he is showing very considerable potential.

How many times have our 3 main strikers all scored in the first three games of a season? barnes looked like he could be special the first time I watched him score a header at the back post at withdean not sure if that was his debut? CMS no doubt is premier league class, I havnt seen Hoskins yet but can't wait

Hoskins superbly taken goal didn't help Ashley did it.

Delighted that Barnes is scoring - as we know he can. And delighted we have another striker now fit and pressing for a place.

Why? Cause he scored a blinder tonight? He's scored a few of them last season as well if I remember. I dont think anyones ever doubted he's capable of scoring a few belters
No. He is obviously referring to starting a thread saying he was NOWHERE NEAR good enough for the side when he clearly was, and is proving to be even at a higher level. And the same for the 3 or 4 people who backed you up. But really, this is bordering on gloating and is every bit as unconstructive as that thread because now we find ourselves in a position where Barnes' performances have to be over-analysed on here in an effort to prove some very tedious point. No-one owes anyone an apology, that was last season - time to look forward IMO.

By all means analyse his performance, but can we leave all this "where are the moaners now?" bollocks behind please?

But I have to agree with a lot of this. Didn't go to Pompey but my brother tells me he was very ordinary there. However even if he Barnes on the bench for us regularly this season, what a player to have there! He's good enough to start for most clubs in this league IMO. Hoskins' goal off the bench has left Gus with a selection headache for Saturday. How the f*** does he drop any of them?

I don't care how inconsistent he is as long as he scores. Credit to the boy, he must have aware of the criticism he has received from some but he has got on with it and is proving people wrong. He's no Flash Harry, just a down to earth lad who has obviously learned from previous mistakes. No need for a big household name signing in this position. Another player transformed by Poyet and the training staff. Keep your feet on the ground young man and let your goals do the talking.

People criticise Barnes because he misses a few. But here's the point: yes he missed plenty of chances last season, but he also scored twenty. How many times does that tell you he was in the right position? His goals per game ratio was actually better than Murray's. You can't buy that sort of instinct.

How many other strikers have we had who've hardly scored a goal for us, because every time the ball's dropped into space, they've been somewhere else? You've got to be in it to win it, and if you guaranteed me right now that Barnes would miss twenty or thirty sitters this season but still score twenty goals, I would take that in a heartbeat. You'd be mad to complain at that.

He must have been one of the younger leading goalscorers last season. Imagine what he could be like with another year's experience under his belt? Not bad for a twenty year old who was loaned from Argyle to Eastbourne Borough two years ago.

Life is good, people

He's the sort of player that can look kak for 89 minutes then scores a beauty - priceless in my view. Having said that i think he's played well so far this season - 3 in 4 pretty bloody excellent.

this, he has had some unfair critism so far, give the lad a break - if he's scoring then that's all that matters

Some great points made in the lad's defense but I think TRHK's stats rather close the argument about his supposed profligacy.

Tremendous first goal last night - absolutely the perfect strike and the irony that the ball was gifted to him by arguably their best player on the night shouldn't be missed....... how quickly you can go from hero to villain.

Give Barnesy the credit too for being prepared to take responsibility for penalties especially after our abysmal history last season - it takes some chuzpah and the lad has it in bagfuls.

That aside he didn't contribute too much over the 90 minutes apart from a lot of willing running, a great strike for an offside "goal" and a fabulous pass to CMS to run onto and strike the foot of the post. Irony? Sure, but when you are comparing work rate and the level of fear and sheer panic that a forward can cause it seems just a touch harsh to match anyone against CMS who, as the original Duracell bunny, is an absolute one off!

It's going to be very interesting to see who gets places up front game by game but none of them are going to let us down and opposition defenses will be having a few sleepless nights before (and after!) playing us this season :D

How many Goals does Barnes have for us now?

I have laid down a bet with an Albion fan at work who hates Barnes that Barnes will score 15+ again this season (come to think of it, i wonder if its Mr Burns) £30 coming my way.

I'm glad he's doing well, to be honest I thought this division might have been a step up too much for him. He's a trier, and with CMS to play with we have a very hard-chasing and battling front two.

And with Hoskins about to step up when required we are looking more potent than even last year, it's all good

Be happy for Barnes, I'm delighted for the lad

I thought he looked a bit off the pace in the Donny game and I put that down to missing the Portugal trip and part of pre-season due to the birth of his first child.

He is a great prospect and I'd rather he missed a few but in the right place than not be there at all. CMS will create chances for him and vice versa.

The club rate him highly and I think by the end of the season when he has another 15+ goals to his name, most people will agree!

If he can be more composed in front of goal (something that often comes with age) then he could be something special for us
