Wonder if Barnes will go for talks and say "thanks but no thanks"?

Hello Ashley

Hi

We'll offer you an extra £5,000k a week, guaranteed for three years, and double it if we go up. Oh, we're second at the moment, by the way.

Cheers

Whether Brighton have a replacement already lined up is, in reality, neither her nor there. With probably annual losses of more than £8million the club is not in a position to turn down upwards of £1million for a player who can leave for free in the summer.

I am sure that is true - but if it is the difference between the prem and the Championship next year ....

Jesus, he won't sign a contract and seems clear to me that whilst he has played for Oscar it has been out of necessity as he is not first choice as he is behind Ulloa and may well be behind CMS when he eventually returns and of course Obika. Get Conway for Buckley and I'd be more than happy and think the squad will be a better one. Well done to Ashley for what he has achieved for Brighton and lets not forget what Brighton have done for him. Another striker from a west country club going nowhere and whose career took off with us.

That sums it up

if we are serious about promotion surely we don't care too much about the 750k we could make today.

we could make £100m in June, and he could help that happen.

i thought Bloom played poker?

You haven't seen his hand yet though.

Very much this. Obviously I don't know the ins and outs of the contract negotiations, and I do trust TB is doing what he feels is best for the club, but it almost feels like we haven't learned from the mistake we made with Murray. It's all good and well saying we will get a replacement in etc, but as we found out after Murray that can prove very difficult.

Surely it indicates that we have learned about the mistake made with Murray. We are selling him for 1m now instead of letting his contract run out in the summer and getting nothing.

Besides, Barnes is not the key to promotion for us. Ulloa is the key man, playing alongside wingers that can provide the crosses for him put away: Conway, KLL and possibly Buckley.

My prediction is that in two weeks time Barnes will play against us in EXACTLY the same manner as he has played 100 times FOR us – work hard, win a load of high balls, win some free kicks, tackle back, miss a good chance, then score a tidy winner, and that afterwards 48 morons on NSC will each type exactly the same post, along the lines of “Why the fu(k did he never play like that for us?”

This is the post of the year for me so far. I believe you've totally hit the nail on the head.

Burnley apparently also preparing to throw 1.25m at Nahki Wells, according to the BBC.

I have definitely begun to appreciated Barnes more over the last half season or so, but I don't think keeping hold of Barnes would be the difference between promotion or not staying in the Championship.

Not sure I completely agree with that. Our Chairman is a highly successful punter. Promotion is (said to be) worth £120 million. Is it really a 119/1 chance that we will be promoted this season? Clearly not. Therefore I think it highly likely that a replacement is planned.

I told you so. It was obvious we would accept the bid for Ash with an increase over the £750k. Good business IMHO.

A replacement will be found and he is NOT John Obika.

I wouldn't be so sure BB. If the club knew Ash was off they would have gone out and got a replacement sorted... they have - Obika, initially for a month probably for the rest of the season.

That's what I reckon... depressing aren't I?

Obika is a 93 day loan, the club made a mistake in their initial announcement, and corrected it later.
