Our team is built from the back, and for me, that means our captain should be player of the season. Gordon Greer has been absolute rock in defence. Adam El-Abd and Lewis Dunk both deserve very credible mentions, as does Liam Bridcutt. But overall, for me, our captain is our current player of the season.

Unless Vicente scores in every game for the rest of the season and we go up automatically!...

Hate the Barnes knocking as people should see what he does when he has not got the ball, works very hard, and you need to look past his ball control which is pretty average for a pro player and some of his shooting is woeful, but he is young and he is learning, there are more talented players in the squad, but not as committed, so cant argue with his place in the team, sometimes I do wonder why he never comes off, when he is having a poor game?

BUT

not a chance with player of the season.

That will be a straight choice between Greer who has been outstanding and Bridcutt who in my opinion can play in the prem, he is awesome and way in front of Barnes for POY award.

(this is not an anti Barnes post, i like him.)

Scored 12 goals (plus another in the wrexham shoot out), assisted or significantly contributed to 10 others. He has certainly played a part in our success this year, but I don't think his all round performances have been to a high enough standard consistently enough to warrant player of the season.

Agree with every word of that.

Ignoring the understandable and genuine support for Ashley, which is excellent, and a very good idea, I think he's actually a close 3rd behind Greer and Bridcutt, in that order. The 3 of them have been the backbone of the side throughout the season, and have all been consistently very good for us. As much as I love Kaz, while Buckley, El-Abd and Noone have had periods where they have looked superb, if you are looking over the entire season, then it's:

1. Greer
2. Bridcutt
3. Barnes.

However, if there was a campaign to "show the love" for Ashley, I wouldn't have any problem with that, as it's not a huge leap for me to class him as "Player of the Season." Just my opinion, like.

That sums up my thoughts although my preference would be:

1. Bridcutt
2. Barnes
3. Greer (the red card let him down)

I imagine CMS, Lualua, Noone and Vicente will all be in with a shout on popularity alone. I think it would be unfair for Vicente to win on so few performances.

I would give vote for Barnes if he had earned it, but he hasn't imho. He's a good utility player, good defensively, but he blows hot and cold.

Liam Bridcutt for me has been immense, and for shear joy he has given me this season I would vote for Mr Injury time goals, Buckley

El-Abd, Navarro, Bridcutt or Greer for me. Barnesy deserves runner-up.

how moronic can you get,

explain to me how Barnes can deserve RUNNER UP if you've listed FOUR other players who you'd prefer to see win the thing?

Not sure he will be player of the season but saying that he deserves recognition from sections of the support.

Why people seem to be on a witch hunt against a young guy who has scored lots of goals for the club and is currrently our leading scorer when being 5th in the championship is beyond me.

The only truely dissapointing players this season have been Harley (may turn out to be good in the long run) and Paynter.

Harley isn't playing and Paynter has left. We have to hate someone!!

How sad that it's our top scorer this season and scored 20 in our league title winning side last season!

Oh and but the way he's only 22 but we are not meant to mention that are we...

Can i just point out without Barnes Pens this season his still scored 7 goals from Open play which would make him our 2nd top scorer behind CMS which is not bad considering his played on the wing an awful lot

I am not a critic of Barnes but why do people keep saying this?

There is absoulutely no guarantee whatsoever that he will keep improving. Football is littered with players who were good at a certain age and just didn't 'train on'.

He might improve to be a top Premier League Player, he might stay as he is which, in my opinion, is average Championship/upper League 1 standard, or he might regress to be lower league.

Let's hope it's the first of those!

As for Player of the Year - let's wait for a few more games yet.

To have scored 12 goals so far this season for the lowest scoring team in the Division marks him out as very high Championship standard. Agree its impossible to say how good he will get and I think the age thing is a red herring as well but give him some obvious credit, he is way above Div 1 standard.
