No we can put it down with the ECB obsession of winning T20, you may just have noticed County 4 Day only gets played in May and September, hardly the right way to get players fit for Test Cricket.

The simple fact is England just aren’t very good at test cricket, and haven’t been for years. Root, Anderson, Broad and the occasional Stokes miracle have papered over a lot of cracks. There’s some nascent talent in there (Robinson, Hameed) and Wood and Woakes are OK in the right conditions. But there’s a lot of dross. Plus the coach is shite.

The team have certainly failed to deliver. This collective of players is so close to a golden era. Root, Anderson, Broad and Stokes are exceptional cricketers who will go down as all time greats for England. As you say Robinson, Wood & Woakes are very good players too. Wasted potential. A team which can field players of that quality needs to do a lot better, even with the ageing Anderson and Broad.

You can drop Burns, Pope and Buttler for the rest of the series.

The replacements are no better, but at least I wouldn't have to suffer watching Burns play with a crooked bat across the line every ball His technique is simply woeful

Foakes would undoubtedly improve us behind the stumps and can bat. His continued omission is a mistake.

Convicts didn't enforce the follow on, I would guess they blast a quick 200, declare and then book their Tee Times?

Even there you are being very generous. The ball that got Woakes (and the carbon copy that got Robinson) was just a stock ball. If either of them defend properly on the front foot, then the turn is covered and it passes without alarm.

Stokes too - yes he was trying to hit out - but he was doing so with no shape, and with his head in the air.

Yep. Even at the time the coach appointment felt like the easy/cosy appointment (Kirsten a far stronger candidate). But I’m not sure the worlds greatest super coach could turn this lot in to a good test team, the problems run a lot deeper than that.

Wow, that was an optimistic bet! I’d have wanted 100/1 or more for that one I think. We’re rubbish and have been for some time.

Australia never enforce the follow on. Not unless there is no chance they will have to bat again (e.g weather).

They lost a Test in India in 2001 after doing so and have avoided it since.
