England avoided defeat just once in 2021 when Root failed to score a hundred, a rain-affected match against New Zealand

RIP English Test cricket. The body will be cremated, placed into an inflatable urn, and tossed around the crowd at the latest incarnation of the game for those with a short attention span.

Joe Root in 2021 - 1,708 runs at 61

James Anderson in 2021 - 39 wickets at 21

Ollie Robinson in 2021 - 37 wickets at 21

England in 2021;

P 15
W 4
D 2
L 9

It’s actually staggering how bad the rest have been when they’ve had three standout performers this year in that way.

What Anderson must be thinking when he's bowling a peak spell ... to 2 slips ... because most of those above him don't know how many days make 5.

Wankers

They should just go out and treat it as a T20. Would do just as well.

Mentally weak England always give the impression that they want to get tours over with, often grizzling over the years over home or family sickness …. other than when in the stunning Windies.

With the honourable exemption of the Gatting and Strauss squads.

Whilst mentally tough Australians always give the impression that, anywhere in the world, they want to bat forever and send middle stumps flying at 90mph.

Chris Silverwood - he’s got a plan, lots of positives, we have to find a way of pushing back.

I think he just gave himself a B+.

I notice Silverwood has swallowed whole the Graham Potter excuses book of "taking the positives" while the shite results keep piling up

'Lots of positives' might have been the best thing for England before the Ashes started.

The worst thing about this series is that none of it is surprising.

As Australian sides go I'd say this is one of the best of recent years, but it is not in the same league as the Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh sides of the 90s / early noughties.

As for England, it is clear that the one-day mentality runs through the line-up from top to bottom. Giles and Silverwood are the worst leaders in my 53 years, Root is a poor captain, we have failed to produce any decent test batsmen over the last decade, our spinners are a joke, we drop catches. It is a total shambles that requires root and branch reform, but at the centre of it needs to be a proper evaluation of how counties can survive financially and how red ball and white ball cricket can mutually co-exist.

Whilst there is a bit of “they shoot horses, don’t they?” about the squad, English cricket needs to make up its mind re red ball cricket. If they aren’t going to invest in long format and develop test players then they need to scrap it and stop being an embarrassment to cricket fans, some of whom pay a fortune to follow them around the world.
In summary, money has taken sport over hook, line and sinker. Just waiting for five a side to take over the EPL and that’ll be me done.

I’m afraid we might as well scrap the long form of the game in this country. Lots of us love it but it seems the masses, the media, the money men and most of the players have absolutely no interest in it.
That was utter humiliation.
