I love all this technical talk about batsmen , bowlers and tactics.... it won't stop us losing 5-0 though.

These days the Oval tends to be a lower, slower wicket. The days of steepling bounce there are gone. That only really exists at Old Trafford these days.

Used to be the best pitch on the planet when the Brinds looked after it. Chief reason why a Surrey batsman would get the nod on an Aussie tour. If only we had four Graham Thorpes batting rather than one coaching.

Key difference is the bowling from everything I've seen.

1. Aussie pacers are regularly putting it in the fourth stump channel, at a length that draws the batter forward and tempts him to play. You then just have to wait for the one that does "just enough" to draw the false shot. Or, alternatively, send down a bad ball and watch the batters eyes light up and draw the false shot...

2. Aussies have a quality spin option they know they can rely on if the pace attack isn't getting the job done.

And then you can add:

3. Aussies have fielded better, in general. England have put down a lot of catches and it's hurt them big time, in both tests.

Think you missed:
4. Aussie bowlers quicker than ours, meaning more edges, and those edges flying to slip (we’ve had lots of edges fall short).

If you keep having edges fall short then the positioning of the slips comes into question. Which I remember noting in Brisbane.

It is the keepers job to position the depth of the slips. Look at the catches the Aussies have taken in the slips this series so far, usually waist to chest high with the fingers pointing skywards Aussie style in the main, whilst we’ve been grubbing in the grass fingers down. It’s a really good point, and in this respect it is the keeper who is accountable.

And the captain is generally in there! Although given it sounds like he’s too scared to tell the bowlers to bowl fuller, perhaps he’s also not keen on telling the keeper to step up a bit…

Half the England innings this year haven't gone beyond 5 runs without losing a wicket.

Looks like we're turning to Zak Crawley to turn things round.

Any predictions for the third test (other than the bleeding obvious)?

I've put a tenner on Smith to get a ton in the first innings @ 3/1

...apart from that

England

13/2

120/4

198 all out

EDIT ......sorry, missed the 'bleeding obvious' bit

Is there no room for any optimism?

I’m still of the opinion that the size of the selection pools is a huge factor but the English Players don’t become crap overnight do they?

Maybe others see the same, but Bairstow in along with Buttler who retains the gloves. I am old school bought up on Knott, Russell even French, this is Test Match Cricket and not Woolworths and we know what happened to them along with their Pick and Mix policy. You put round pegs in round holes.

I’m really tired. I have 2 children under 4, and got strep throat - feeling really run down and rough for about a week or so now (not covid).

I desperately need to catch up on some sleep, as my eldest will likely wake me up around 6am tomorrow morning demanding I play with him.

Why the **** am I still going to watch the first session tonight? What’s wrong with me?

You don't like cricket, you love it !

The solution, of course, is to get your eldest into the game. Then let him sit up with you. No 6am shenanigans then. He'll be spark out.
