England 3 down by close, can we just concede now? It’s embarrassing how terrible we are in Aussie conditions, aside from that 2010 series we always have been, utterly woeful.
We have reached the stage where we are unable to compete with the Aussies.

It's like when the Ryder Cup was so one sided it had to be changed to allow European players in rather than just get trounced using GB players time after time.

Do you think its almost an indication of the British class system? Sussex for example rarely take young players into their colts system from state schools, if we are only really picking the England team, with a number of notable exceptions over the years, from the public schools system then surely the talent pool will be dwarfed by the Aussies?

Cricket is their national sport, when I visit both Adelaide and Perth in 2013 and 2017 I was amazed driving into the respective city centres going to Tests on the Sat/Sun at the large amount of youngsters, of all ages, playing cricket in parks etc. With that level of participation they will always have an advantage.

Burns technique is hopeless isn't it, his bat arcs one way then the next on the way down, no wonder he edges so much or misses the ball completely, it's like a hacker's golf swing.

Burns looks like a walking wicket every time he comes to the crease

I wouldn't put money on us surviving this session without losing any more wickets

Don’t be fooled by these Aussie smug commies, that ball from Starc wasn’t even good, it’s an average delivery played poorly., if you want to get runs and put value on your wicket in Australia you have to have the ability to leave on length, it’s poor from Burns again.

It's the same with Rugby. A guy I went to school with was an excellent rugby player, made England U18s. Didn't have the money to go to Brighton College and was then dropped from Harlequins and England. Now captains the Philippines and plays in Hong Kong so not all bad.

It is so depressing that Burns is considered good enough to open for England. He is absolutely shit at this level.

Look at how the Aussies are bowling full, full, then full again as opposed to England's short, short and short again. Our tactics are so poor. Root has to go as captain for me. This lack of dynamism and clear thinking in the field has gone on for too long. Not playing a spinner maybe won't come into it because of our batting, but could be another poor decision on this pitch. We seem stuck with pragmatism the whole time.

When the alternative is Dom Sibley it puts it all into stark (Starc?) relief.

Australia is even more class-conscious than England. 15% of Australian kids go to fee-paying schools. I don't blame you for not realising this, as most people have this preconception of Australia as some egalitarian sun-loving nation where sport is accessible to all.

Some of that is probably true - sport is a massive part of Aussie culture. But the fact is, the only people who play rugby union in Australia are people whose parents paid for their education (and that isn't the case in various rugby hotbeds of England), so it wouldn't surprise me if their cricket was similar.

Who do you think would be a good option as a spinner? Leach was slogged all over the place, Ali has retired. Bess isn't good enough. Rashid or Virdi perhaps?

It's more like the counties and ECB do not have the desire to shake up the sport and make it more competitive. We seem unable to create enough gutsy, play to win cricketers. The odd gifted one comes along but never enough of them at one time.

My abiding memory of 02/03 Ashes is that the first three Tests were finished by Saturday. The third test started on a Friday and still was won by Saturday. We are not as bad as that tour, believe me.

Ah well. At least this debacle means my sleep patterns are not going to be disturbed too much over the next few weeks. Not pulling all-nighters to watch this shite.
