London Irish said:This is a lesson for Asda that corporate social responsibility means being part of a local community and not putting your own selfish interests above those of the people who live, work and spend leisure time in that community.
The Albion is not just about football, it is a powerful symbol of our pride as Sussex people. That Asda thought they could attack that without reaping a whirlwind of consequences reveals utter stupidity on their part.
As a business they have legitimate concerns about traffic issues but these should have been dealt with in the normal channels and they should have taken full notice of the council expertise on this matter.
You would hope that Asda with their blundering attempts to take their narrow, selfish case into the community with this petition will realise now that the community has spoken.
Congratulations to everyone, especially to those who organised the website, liaised with the club and provoked/dealt with media enquiries, which I suspect was the crucial element in Asda finally shitting themselves.
As Martin Perry has asked us to suspend the boycott, I hope collectively in our identity as Albion fans we will follow this advice, as a campaign can only be effective if it is united and disciplined. Of course as individuals we are all free to make what decisions we like about where we shop in future.
We must naturally monitor Asda's input into the council's decision-making process - and they will have had a small taste of what may lie in store for them in future if their lack of community solidarity succeeds in having any sway over the planners.
Mike Ward out! London Irish in!
