I've had a message from Martin Perry:-

He says "I thought the campaign was absolutely brilliant and once again what a fantastic bunch of fans we have got".

I'll add to that with, "We are delighted with the campaign and the response from fans."

This is a lesson for Asda that corporate social responsibility means being part of a local community and not putting your own selfish interests above those of the people who live, work and spend leisure time in that community.

The Albion is not just about football, it is a powerful symbol of our pride as Sussex people. That Asda thought they could attack that without reaping a whirlwind of consequences reveals utter stupidity on their part.

As a business they have legitimate concerns about traffic issues but these should have been dealt with in the normal channels and they should have taken full notice of the council expertise on this matter.

You would hope that Asda with their blundering attempts to take their narrow, selfish case into the community with this petition will realise now that the community has spoken.

Congratulations to everyone, especially to those who organised the website, liaised with the club and provoked/dealt with media enquiries, which I suspect was the crucial element in Asda finally shitting themselves.

As Martin Perry has asked us to suspend the boycott, I hope collectively in our identity as Albion fans we will follow this advice, as a campaign can only be effective if it is united and disciplined. Of course as individuals we are all free to make what decisions we like about where we shop in future.

We must naturally monitor Asda's input into the council's decision-making process - and they will have had a small taste of what may lie in store for them in future if their lack of community solidarity succeeds in having any sway over the planners.

I suspect that Asda thought they were "doing their bit for the community" which is something major retailers are quick to try and demonstrate these days - not of course because they want to divert attention from their corporate activities you understand!!:D

Perhaps the campaign against Asda has taught them - although it's a shame they needed teaching - that supporting the Albion is, in itself, a vital element in the local community! Ignore that simple fact and they alienate precisely those people they misguidedly thought they might be "supporting".

Went to dinner with a couple last night. The bloke had actually signed the Asda petition. Naturally I was mortified. When I asked him why, he said (and I knew) that he wasn't a fan of football, and why should they dictate the running of the city and blah blah blah.

I put my points of view across, and he seemed to accept them. His REAL problem was with the 'middle class wankers' in Withdean who won't let Albion supporters park near their houses. When I said that the residents didn't want footy fans near their houses because they claimed they were just going to be cased for burglars (remember that claim?), he said 'well sod them. Burgle their houses and let them have something really to moan about.

In the end, he said he was going back to Asda to ask for a petition to retract his original signature.
