They are truly vile and really wind me up.
If you look at anything the club puts on Instagram, the comments below immediately start flooding in from particular nationalities about ‘their’ player at the Albion. Aggressive, blinkered, demanding. Why isn’t he starting every game. Brighton are disrespecting him etc. Nothing to do with what the club’s social media team has actually just posted. I first noticed it when we signed Jahanbaksh, but now it’s endemic.

It’s wierd, but it’s made me realise the huge degree of change in what constitutes a “fanbase” once a club reaches the PL. I imagine this is universal across the PL too, not just a Brighton thing.

These tiny football nations get very emotional in support of particular players rather than teams. Imagine the abuse poor Napoli are now going to get if they don't consistently pick Scotland's midfield. ;)

Brighton factually.....

yeah, I have seen some the posts from Gambia about Minteh, blinkered beyond belief.
some even bring in religion, I have now stopped reading them, a price we pay I guess, but should we put up with comments that are homophobic or bring in religious bigotry. I would like the club to stick Minteh in a rainbow coloured top and watch them go into meltdown....

I do actually agree with that point. For a long time I’ve felt it strange that VAR will review every single red card issued, but will not intervene when it’s the result of a second yellow.
Presumably they'd have to review BOTH yellow cards? The first one may have been marginal, or a ref's error. And once you start doing that, we're back in the situation where the game is stopped for 5 minutes while the VAR folk pore over every frame. I think what the Arsenal podcast people wanted was a post-match review to potentially avoid a one-match ban. I think one issue with adopting such a protocol is that often yellow cards are quite marginal. And of course in this situation the irony is that no amount of analysis would overturn the decision - both yellow cards were very clearly bookable offences!

The time for goading is when they visit the Amex. Constant booing of Rice along with 'you dirty northern b'stard' should have their fanbase on strings within 5 minutes.
This. Plus a resounding chorus of “hijo de puta” aimed at that punchable hair-dying turdhole Arteta from the second he leaves the technical area. To the tune of “bring on the champions” at Roots Hall all those years ago.

Oh I wish I was the caller. So he's saying that no fan should ever call TS with an opinion unless they've played the game at the highest level? And the football fans across the country should keep their opinions to themselves and listen to the hallowed words of some dinosaur who's stealing a living? A dinosaur who declared Roberto de Zerbi a bad appointment by Brighton, based on the fact that he hadn't heard of him? Idiot.
I know, slightly confusing as their whole show is based on and relies on people phoning in... I actually thought the fan made some solid arguments but Souness was so rattled that his view had been challenged he then went to his defacto argument of 'have you ever played the game?' What a moron.

He totally neglects to mention that these rules have been introduced because people who he would say 'are playing the game' are finding ways to cheat or managers and pundits like him have previously been moaning about it.

I was really taken aback a few years ago meeting someone who supported Ronaldo, not a team, not even whoever he was playing for, just him. This feels a bit similar and I guess comes from your hero being involved in a sport you love but for teams you have no emotional or geographical investment or connection with.

Think they're massively triggered because we have basically ended their title challenge already. You have to be near perfect to beat city to a title. Quite funny really. Would love to see what we're like against them when we have our full first team.

You really should be having a little chat about this with Hans Solo AKA Swansman...

A fanbase either currently goes to Brighton matches or has done in the past. All the others are just internet weirdos.

And, yes, every club has them. Some of the worst "Chelsea Experts" on Twitter have never been to England, never mind the Kings Road.

I listened to the Arsenal podcast "Handbrake Off" yesterday. It's one of The Athletic's club-specific podcasts, this one with Amy Lawrence (very well-respected journo), Adrian Clarke (Arsenal player from the 90s and long-time pundit/journo), and Ian Stone (comedian, mate of Alan Davies). Three very sensible individuals, one might have thought!

Their take on the whole Rice-gate incident included the following:

- The ref should have used "common sense" (nb: but they want consistency)....
- The authorities should be able to review red cards in cases where the sanction is the result of a second yellow (and in this case, if such a process was in place, Rice's second yellow would obviously be over-turned)
- The further one match ban in THIS case is disproportionate....in particular because it will cause Rice to miss the North London Derby (which is not fair!)....AND because Arsenal are already suffering from an injury to the obvious Declan Rice replacement, namely Merino, which makes it DOUBLY UNFAIR!!

It was difficult at times to know whether they were deliberately parodying themselves, so ludicrous were their arguments!!!

I'm not sure how we'd react if the roles were reversed, but I'd like to hope that there would be at least ONE Brighton fan who understood the rules and the way they were applied. Anyway, the rest of the podcast is actually quite interesting in that they are pretty critical of the way Arsenal reacted after going down to ten men.

My Dad was born in north London and grew up an Arsenal fan. He passed his love of the Gunners on to my brother (but obvs not me - phew). Despite these family links, I really, really hope Arsenal do NOT win the title. The events of Saturday have made me realise how unbearable it would be to see Arteta and his crew of over-priviliged players (not mentioning the fans) parading through Islington! In fact, it would be wonderful if they missed out by 2 points again :)
We'd react in the same way but it wouldn't be given anywhere near the same airtime as Rice's. Other way round it would of been more "Veltnam knew he'd been booked and rules are rules, he should of known better, yes, Rice has played him but that's what football is all about".

Spurs and City away are their next 2....they could be knocked right out of it the way City are going. They know them 2 points dropped to us could be massive in the grand scheme of things. If only Ayari had buried the chance 😁

Well my take on the whole thing is this.

1. Pedro should have been booked based on the briefings given at the start of the season.
2. Hinshelwood should have been booked for pulling the shirt however, if neither ref nor linesman saw it then he got away with one.
3. Arteta should be regularly booked for being outside his technical area.
4. Rice got what he deserved. Both yellows were correct.
5. Veltman played the system, just as White tried to do last year against Estupian and just as every footballer who stays down when not injured does.

The problem is the lack of consistency from the refs (no surprise there). They briefed about booking players that delay free kicks but in most cases don't enforce it evidenced by the fact that pretty much every free kick you will see someone moving to stand in front of the ball. I'd love to see players booked everytime they grab a shirt because if that happened, it would soon stop.

I go to watch 90 minutes of football but we are deprived of that by the shenanigans of players and manipulating the system. Time wasting is bookable offence but rarely happens until the last few minutes. Technical fouls, Man City being the master, stifle the game and fake injuries merely to break up play. In my view, refs should always call on a physio if they reached a point where they stop the game. That way the player is required to go off for at least 30 seconds.
