Then surely you are discriminating purely on the chaps race, over which he has no control. Surely that is a form of racism is it not? I'm not blaming or judging you but strictly speaking it is still racism.

I think there is a natural level of racism that is unintentionally (usually) bred into all of us. The fear or dislike of something different or unknown is human nature. But is is also important to recognise it for what it is, only then can we make sure we do not let this slip into something more negative and damaging.

Could you be a little more specific?

I wouldn't want my daughter marrying a Palace fan (wouldn't have em in the house!!) but I take it that's a given!?!

Very wise words. A fear or mistrust of them over the hill was, one assumes, an important part of human pre-history and is still an easy for dubious politicians or newspaper barons to play on. The point is that some, but not all, of us have evolved a bit since then to recognise it as the irrelevance that it now is.

Never much cared for them over the hill.

Was not a serious comment, MOH. In fact, where I live, 'them over the hill' are quite a friendly bunch, if a little backward.

Anyone else bored to f*** of these type of threads? There isn't a person on the planet who isn't racist. i.e. has pre-conceived ideas of a person based on race, religion, or crede however subconscious. It's human nature. As long as you realise that its wrong to form an opinion of a person based on prejudice then I really can't see the problem. IMO, Jade Goody is guilt of being a racist ignoramous - but we all knew that anyway, and I'm fairly sure there are a lot of people out there who are just the same. I just hope that she is allowed to go back to living her life as a innocuous chavvy simpleton. But she won't - she'll be villified (wrongly)
IMO, being ignorant or racist is just another character flaw - no worse than having a temper, being overly selfish etc.

Of course, there are nasty fuckers who see nothing wrong in taking their character flaws and imposing unpleasantness on others (as opposed to looking at themselves). There are at least 5 or 6 such vile, nasty people on this very board who are like that, and they are people I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire.

Plenty of people on here might be considered over the hill.

However, though some of us may drool a bit more than is generally called for, we are by and large an inoffensive bunch.

Although you are are probably right. One or two may be in need of care.

Agreed. Racism seems to cover everything from name calling to ethnic cleansing. At many levels, what some call racisim seems to me to be perfectly natural behaviour observable in many species and organisms. Still, it is much easier to pick on other peoples supposed defficiencies rather than addressing our own.

I abhor racism in any form. But what I cannot understand is why it is only classed as racism if directed at a black or asian person?

Example. On Big Brother last year, Nikki Grahame repeatedly mocked the Canadian guy Richard's accent and referred to him as a "Yank" ??? In a similar way in which Jade and co are bullying Shilpa. Yet Nikki leaves the house a national heroine. If I was Richard I'd have been bloody offended!

Which is why I think some people over-react the moment an Indian/Muslim person is put down in any way and scream "IT'S RACIST, IT'S RACIST!!!" I might find an Indian woman unattractive and think she's a "dog". At the same time, I might find a white woman a "dog" - how is it racist?

You are correct. Racism exists, and is wrong for both black and white in this country. However the point seems to have flown way above your head. Seriously, how many white people in this country have failed to get employment, have been persecuted or physically attacked purely on the basis of their skin colour? It is comments like yours that play into the hands of the BNP. (And no, I do not think you are racist or a BNP member.)
