Well after listening to the government on the new legislation about charging at least 40p a unit on alcohol I have realised that many years ago I was indeed a pre-loader. My daughter is now a pre-loader and I dare say my youngest will become one in time.

So after many years of going out for a bevy I am not only coming to terms with the fact that I have binge drinking tendencies but also that I have a history of pre-loading. I`m devastated by it all. I just used to be a pisshead.

For the record I am going to pre-load with a nice cold Duvel before I go out tonight.

What is pre-loading - getting pissed up cheaply at home before you go out?

I don't think I have EVER done that.

I think the last 4 pack of Blackthorn I bought was £2.86 which must be well below the 40p/unit threshold I imagine.

I used to drink quite a bit but have never pre-loaded. The fun part for me was in the getting drunk, not being drunk when you get there. Nowadays i don't drink to get drunk at all, normally 3 or 4 pints and that's it. Pre-loading to me just seems a bit common.

Just been reading the Government's proposals on this funnily enough. They will clearly help pubs as pub prices will not be below the threshold and some drinkers will now "pre-load" down the pub. There is argument as to whether supermarkets will lose out or not i.e. less sales, but bigger price per can. Health Minister Andrew Lansley reckons it will make no diffference "If a bottle of vodka is 8 quid or 12 quid, people will still pre-load". Home Office Minister Theresa May says it will stop people getting "as pissed" as they would do therfore reducing anti-socia behaviour". That's about the sum of it. My view is that the proposals can't do much harm but won't have the degree of impact that Cameron and May probably think they will. And it won't happen until 2014.

Can I add a few things :

1. Up until the last 10 years, people admitted to hosptial with liver problems were almost always in their 60s, at least. It is now very common for these people being admitted to be in their 40s.

2. I gather it can only take a few years of hard drinking, possibly as few as 4 or 5 for women (a few more for men) for people to exhibit liver problems.

3. If you are admitted to hospital with liver issues, specialist liver care is so bad, there is a v.good chance of it being fatal - something like a 60% mortality rate, including first time of admittance.

There seems to be confusion as to weather pre-loading is getting drunk before going out, or just having one before going out, to get the motor running.

Bloody stupid idea from the Government to propose a minimum price for alcohol.Won't do anything to curb the real problem drinkers,who cause trouble but will just piss everybody off and drive them to drink.
Looks like the drinks industry and supermarkets may well challenge the legality of this move and good luck to them.
There are plenty of laws at present to deal with aggro drinkers,but these are not enforced properly.

Am I a pre loader........no I am not 'cos I don't often go out boozing these days;however if I was younger I would be and without doubt, my offspring certainly are!

Used to at times. Have everyone round, have a chat and a couple of drinks then go off to the club. Maybe play some FIFA or Rock Band at the same time.

I always have at least 6 cans or share a bottle of vodka around a mates house before we go out. Simply cant afford to start drinking and continue buying at a pub/club from 8pm till 4/5am.
