I enquired about bone marrow but you have to be under 45.

Both my dad and brother needed large blood transfusions while undergoing major operations - badly, erm, ruptured? perforated? something ulcer and brain surgery for epilepsy - within a year of each other in 1990/1991. And they're both still here today.

I know a neuro surgeon who performs epilepsy operations. He has a video of an eight year old girl with the top of her skull removed. He then applies electrical stimulation to try and locate the lobe where the mal originates from so he can perform the most appropriate surgery. In some patients, he implants a series of sensors into the skull plate that he has removed so that the brain wave stimulation and can be monitored. These people, sadly, cannot be operated on but it may be possible to apply stimulation to stop a seizure developing.

Assuming thats your brother MYOB, I hope that in his case the surgery has been successful. I can't begin to imagine the courage that he must have had to go through with that surgery.

It was entirely sucessful, he had one seizure shortly after he came around and hasn't had another one since. He's holding down a job as a managment accountant, house, car, etc.

Previously he'd had to do his exams in a room on his own with a time extension, hadn't been able to leave the house unaccompanied for too long, etc.

First person in Ireland to get it done.

You have to have a simple blood test and then if you are a match for someone you have to have the bone marrow farmed.

This can be cut out during an operation or extracted through syringes.

Both seem a bit rough but if you are a match there is a fair chance you could be saving someones life so a small price to pay really.

It could be worse, you might have an op and find that you have had a transfusion from the plastic spac (LI).

I do and the feeling it gives you can be compared to anything, you really feel like your making a difference to or even saving someones life. I don't like needles, in fact am petrified about them, but worth it

I have often thought about it, but whenever the blood wagon has been in town or wherever I've been stuck at work or elsewhere, but will do one day

When I gave my latest blood donation yesterday I handed in my bone marrow registration form and they took the extra sample for that.

Whats the difference with the Anthony Nolan register and why do they have 2 different registers and is it best to be on both?

BTW - It was Starry/Anastasia's Diary that prompted me to register for bone marrow donation at my next blood donation
