One tip - have a look in the Apple UK site for refurbished Macs. That's how I bought mine a couple of years ago - Apple refurbished is effectively a new product and you can make good savings. As new iMacs were released just a few weeks ago there could be some 'old' (but still great) models there.
Re speakers - the built in ones are good quality, but I agree if you want some deep bass or tip-top sound quality then it's a good idea to buy better ones.
Essentially you can assume that all you want is built-in (unless you want to do anything very specialist). It's also amazing how much good free software is out there - and I do mean legally free
