Hammond and O'Callaghan together in mid-field really made us look a team worth a play-off place.I think Hammond is the energy player who manages to get back in defence and help out in attack!!It dosent look the most attractive role in football but watch how many times hes there as a 2nd option when a player has the ball, also note how fast he closes down players and slow down the oppositions attacks, Okay hes no Gerrard but i bet you if he could omprove in his one big weakness(shooting) Hammond would be noticed as a box to box player alot more!! Mansfield proved how much we need him and how much we need others, hurry up Knight and sign someone who is a proffesional player no more Ball boys!!

PS who slags him off?

Hammond has been every bit as good this season as he was last - in fact he has probably been even better. The difference is that, for most of this season, the team around him has played a lot better so he has not stood out as much. Also, having O'Callaghan alongside him, he has been able to play the shorter ball more often knowing that O'Callaghan is capable of moving up the field with the ball and won't necessarily lose it. He is not the fastest in the team but he is not slow either. Being over 6ft tall makes him look slower than he actually is. It would be interesting to see how far he runs in a match, I would guess that only Forster gets within a mile of him. He has a phenominal engine and, although not in the class of Gerrard or Lampard, I think he is the Gerrard of our division. I haven't seen a midfielder playing against us this season who I would rather have in the team.
If there is one player in our team that could make it in the Premier League then Hammond is the man. The Sky commentators were raving about him when we played Orient so you can be sure that there are scouts around keeping an eye on him. I hope we re-sign him before it is too late. Please stay Deano - you know it makes sense!

Most of the problems against Mansfield were due in no small part to the absence of Dean Hammond.

No support for the defence and no midfield player coming short to collect the ball and keep the passing ticking over so the defenders hoof it long.

No real leadership either vocally or in leading by example and no midfield player galvanising the team, competiting physically in the centre of the pitch and almost NO support to the forwards from midfield areas.

If the shambles did anything is strengthened Hammond's bargaining position...

We shall see what a difference Hammond makes today. Let's hope he has a captain's performance.

Erm....that went well.

Will get more chance to see how we cope without him during a 3 match ban.
