Most of the problems against Mansfield were due in no small part to the absence of Dean Hammond.

No support for the defence and no midfield player coming short to collect the ball and keep the passing ticking over so the defenders hoof it long.

No real leadership either vocally or in leading by example and no midfield player galvanising the team, competiting physically in the centre of the pitch and almost NO support to the forwards from midfield areas.

If the shambles did anything is strengthened Hammond's bargaining position...

Not so sure to be honest Richie. Hammond is often a pretty ineffective player for us. He is not (and never will be) a clever tricky midfield playmaker, he never takes a game by the scruff of the neck and dictates play (not his style), he is often slow and requires space and time to operate (Mansfield would never have given him that yesterday). I also believe that he is (currently) not the best player to be Captain as he is neither vocal enough nor leading by example enough during games. Like Dean, I'm from Hastings and have met him a few times (really nice lad). I would love to see him raise his game to the much improved level he found last season, however (especially of late) he has dipped again and looking out of sorts. Maybe the contract discussions have pee'd him off over the last 4 weeks, I don't know - but I am not as convinced as you that his influence would have turned us into a winning team yesterday.

the midfield was the reason we lost yesterday. We had nothing going forward and they were just running through the middle at will. Have no idea what happened to Reid and Fraser but anyone who says Hammond is not vital to our team is mad, and yesterday showed that up fully

I’m surprised that nobody on the phone-in asked about his contract. It was the first thing I thought of after the game (and I tried to speak to DK but they already had a full list of callers). I don’t care about Savage but we shouldn’t be ‘Dicking’ with Hammond.

said before i left sunny cornwall yesterday morning the hammond knockers would be in for a shock and so it showed

we so needed him in that midfield and someone at left back, cant see we would have lost that game then

I didnt think Hammond being out would be a problem....he hasnt had that many great games that I can remember this season....but yesterday showed what a good job he does...Fraser and Reid were often caught too far forwards and there was no cover in front of the defence.....if you look at players like Gilberto at Arsenal or Mascherano at L'pool they do not often stand out...they just go about the job they have to do and do it well...I will be happy to see Hammond back in the starting 11 asap.

It didn't help that defence were hoofing the ball upfield and bypassing them.

it depends which way you look at it really - the defence may have been launching it long as there no other options due to the midfield not offering anything. i do agree that we play long ball football too much, and yesterday it was just playing into the hands of a side who will come up against it more often than not in their league

It didn't help being without him as the midfield were non existant , however I think even if he was playing it wouldn't of made any difference. The players looked un-interested and weren't pumped up enough before the game. They should of come out guns blazing to get the club into the 4th round. Can only assume the pre match team talk was non motivational !

I hope people realise how important Hammond is to us.

He is probably our best player.

I hate the fact that he gets so much stick for being 'anonymous.' It's just bollocks.

Here are some of Wilkins has to say about him.

'I didn't make him captain for no reason. He is an influential player.'

'There are players like that who, as a team-mate and a group of staff you appreciate an awful lot.'

And Dean Wilkins knows alot more about football and Dean Hammond than anybody on here.

Hammond has not had the best of seasons but despite this he was missed yesterday, together with the three players who have moved on,looking at what we have left does not give rise to thinking good times are just around the corner.

Completely agree. As I posted on Brighton fans last night, if you compare the game against Mansfield to the game against Bournemouth the prime difference was Hammond. He does all the simple things well, collects the ball in midfield so many times just by his positional sense and gives it those in the side who should have it like Robinson and Cox. None of that was happening yesterday, and to anyone who has ever moaned about Hammond, they really need to try and understand the importance of this type of player. He doesn't do much pretty stuff that gets noticed but what he does is very very important.

I could count the forward passes Hammond made in the Bournemouth game on one hand, what is there to suggest that he would have played any different against Mansfield?
Although with Fraser's performance he made Hammond look like Fabregas!
