Aha...guess an acorn in its holder could look a bit like the end of a knob...the person who explained it to me said that acorn could also mean nut, guess I put two and two together to get five!

I know about the kloot word, hence klootzak...ball bag!

When I married my (now ex) Dutch wife, we considered a double barrelling of our surnames. She was van den Heuvel, and I am Hall.

We were going to go for Hall van den Heuvel.

Now the spelling here gets a bit odd, but she assured me the Dutch pronunciation then translated into English would have made us "Mr and Mrs Bumhole from the Hills"

We gave it a miss

What about when you've "had a drink and/or fancy a German girl"?

Are you hopelessly tongue-tied by the fact that your everyday experience in German came to a stop at the age of ten?
Uncanny - have you been watching? So, generally I try to steer the conversation onto West German sweets, comics and gameshows of the late 1970s but yes, that can prove a bit hit and miss for some reason.

Lucky your surname isn't Pick...that would have caused widespread amusement!
