More than 50% of participants on this thread are getting better averages than the average score in the UK

3.89 is the average score

Us stragglers at the bottom of the table are dragging the NSC average down though

The opening word you use makes a very big difference.

To me, it's not necessarily about seeking to eliminate just those letters, but also eliminating possible letter combinations too (such as ST, SH, SL, TH, TR, CH, CK, etc) whilst narrowing down others (ie, a letter like this with lots of potential combinations that is found will help identify the letters that are therefore likely to also appear in the word)

Positioning of vowels in your guess also help to narrow down where they (vowels) are likely to appear in a word, and show you where these likely letter combinations will likely fit too. (eg. the guess could help identify whether it is likely to begin CCVxx or CVCxx)

It may seem a disaster should there be no letters found in my first guess but it's not as it means i'll have eliminated a lot of possibilities.

There are players out there who try to identify the word's vowels first, by playing something like adieu, but that is a bad idea imo, as it means that several letters you'll guess will not be in the word whilst making it harder to identify / rule out possible letter combinations. You can discover the vowels in the word just as easily by only using words with 1 or 2 vowels in. (ie. they don't have to include them in a guess and have them turn yellow or green to show that they are in the word)

Others try letters that appear less frequently in words or have very few combinations within their opening words, so it won't reveal as much towards a possible solution, should it then fail to be in the word

In terms of NSC average vs national average, I wonder how many of our higher scoring players also dropped out to help boost our average as they are no longer counted?
