MASSIVE Toon had an average attendance of 16,879 in the 1990/91 season and have won f*ck all since the end of the 60's. All of which makes them even bigger phonies than Chelski. I'd LOVE it if they got relegated.

Derby and now Fulham are pretty much nailed on for the drop, so theres really only one more place up for grabs. Interesting that Newcastle have a WORSE goal difference than Wigan, Sunderland, Brum and Bolton (the four teams immediately below them).

Your post has made me consider who I'd like to see do worse - Leeds or Newcastle. It's a difficult one to call.

It is true that the Newcastle fans have an overinflated sense of their own importance and the size of the club in general but that is no reason to wish for them to go down. I personally loved Keegan when he managed them before and for the first fews days he was back I thought it was brilliant. But, he does not have the quality of players or indeed the commitment of players that he had before. Newcastle will finish lower-mid table and will begin another rebuilding process in the summer. Hopefully Beye, Viduka, Ameobi, Carr, Cacapa will all be out the door as they are toilet to a man.

There fickle nature with managers is a criticism that can justifiably be levelled at Newcastle. I think they should never have got rid of Robson personally. They seem to have this idea that change will always bring a positive outcome but as has been proved time and time again it doesn't. A little patience wouldn't go amiss. I think that Big Sam will look at Newcastle now and think that he is well out of it.

Quite. I hate all this Geordie nation bollocks which thinks that all us Southerners would rather read Dostoevsky and listen to Mozart rather than pop down to Withdean and watch up batter Gillingham. Well I might not be a Geordie but I understand this much.
(1) Keegan isn’t the Messiah. He is a crap manager who does the job of a cheerleader and has as much understanding of tactics as a lobotomised Ashley Cole. His England team was on a par with Mclarens and Taylors and I wouldn’t employ him to empty the bins let alone manage a football club.
(2) Allardyce is better than any manager who will consider coming to the club once Keegan buggers off. And that won’t be long.
(3) Since when did Newcastle have a history of attacking football and being entertained? Half a year in the 90’s? Well I remember Brian Wade sticking 4 past you 20 years ago and I remember crowds of no more than 15000 when you were in old money Division 2. Big Club? My arse. A big feeling of self importance is more to the point when it isn’t warranted.
(4) The fact your chairman feels the need to sit with the fans rather than the directors box means that he is more interested in being popular than winning anything. = Newcastle will win nothing until he goes.
I’d love it love it love it if they went down and I reckon they just might.

isn't it KINDA true though? brighton & hove is about the same size as newcastle, yet compare the general attendances.......not just in the last 10 years but EVER.......not that thats representative of the WHOLE of southern england, but brighton isn't really a footballing city is it? not one that rallies round its local team anyway
not that what i've said is related to the general gist of the thread of course.......

Not from where I’m sitting. Does Keegan seriously believe that the theatre is more popular than football? In London 70,000 people turn up at the Emirates and thousands more at West Ham, Spurs & Chelsea amongst thousands more who are passionate enough about their football. 90% of Brighton fans could tell you how the Keegan appointment would turn out. Passionate? Stoopid more like it to me. As I said earlier, Newcastle in the 80’s got low crowds. It wasn’t a footballing city then – What’s changed since? Its only Man city who have been down to League 1 and have been pulling in crowds of over 30,000 to watch them getting beat by Macclesfield who can claim to be a true footballing city come what may.
In relation to Brighton lets just say that where would we be without passion and commitment? Archer and Bellotti might still be here – Falmer certainly wouldn’t. I think there is more passion than you give us credit for.
What I think really annoys me about Newcastle though, is the comparison that Newcastle fans sometimes make to Barcelona. Barcelona’s president was shot by a dictator in the 30’s, their flag and language has been banned and the ground was about one place where people within the city could express themselves. I don’t remember Freddie Shepherd getting shot by M15, Blair banning the magpie and black and white stripes being made illegal. Geordies are no different from the rest of us. They just like to think they are.
