Ca' La Bionda Ravazzol, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG, Italy

this sells for about £80 a bottle in the best Italian restaurant in london (Locanda Locatelli - if you are interested) but you should be able to pick it up for £30 from somewhere.

To die for.....

Many good tips here http://www.wineanorak.com and a walk around your local Majestic would not be a bad idea, unless you have a good local independent.

European - Maybe a Priorat form Spain or a top Barolo from Italy.
New World Pinot Noir as many people have pointed out tends not overdo the big wine thing, that has put you off. I have found a lot of good ones from New Zealand.

Dorset Seagull

Once Dolphin, Now Seagull
Used to be addicted to Aussie reds but gradually found these a bit full on.

I now prefer something a bit smoother and less potent - I can thoroughly recommend a Chliean Cabernet Sauvignan 'Casillero del Diablo' by Concho Y Toro. Very readily available and although it can be around £7.50 a bottle it is virtually always on offer so no need to pay more than £5.75.

Top shout, couldn't agree more

Valpolicella Classico is a recommendation from me, Majestic do a half decent bottle for £9. Don't buy non 'classico' Valpolicella though, it's no where near as good.

well i realise that mate, but surely being so well connected you could just ring Giorgio and ask what wine he is recommending this week?!!

I'd probably call Plaxy instead as I guess Giorgio will be knee deep in pasta. Im off there soon ish as it happens.

Just 'Amarone' is enough

OK - element of oneupmanship creeping in!

I love it there - cant beat it.

Sorry, not trying to be one up. It is great and I love the decor too. Actually I checked my diary and I am there on 3rd December which is not quite as soon as I had hoped!

been lucky enough to go quite a few times on business, but took mrs HantsSeagull to acknowledge our 20 years of incarceration together not that long ago. Loved the food, wasnt keen on the decor but I like the decor too. Its so 70s, sort of.
