Its Friday, its been a tough week and I want a nice bottle of red for this PM. I usually prefer french bold reds (yes I am still talking about wine) but I find I am often constrained in my choice by my lack of knowledge and relucntance to go beyond my comfort zone. I have £30. any tips? I avoid South African and Australian reds as I find them too overpowering and lacking finesse.

I have the same taste as your good self but have managed to overcome my penchant for a nice French red by dabbling with a smooth Rioja or 2. As long as you don't go below about £6 a bootle you should do ok

TBH Rioja is a pretty good shout and you can get some fine ones for a lot less ££

Are you talking about an accompaniment to a sophisticated meal or... Actually, I'll leave that there. This is Watford O we're talking about.

Just get yourself a bottle of Australian Shiraz, and I guess NSC can look forward to your insufferable round of bellyaching about 9-ish...?

I had a bottle recently of South African Black Rock which was rather good.

Used to be addicted to Aussie reds but gradually found these a bit full on.

I now prefer something a bit smoother and less potent - I can thoroughly recommend a Chliean Cabernet Sauvignan 'Casillero del Diablo' by Concho Y Toro. Very readily available and although it can be around £7.50 a bottle it is virtually always on offer so no need to pay more than £5.75.

Mate....the only way to go is with an Argentinian Malbec...it's the best red in my opinion.
Haven't had the supermarket versions but they're only about 6 quid.
Get stuck in!!!

Talking about Aussie reds being full on - I have tried the Shiraz that is around 14 or 14.5%, full of flavour but can be a bit too heavy, even with food.

Was lucky enough a while back to visit the Barossa Valley and stayed at a B&B where the owner mentioned that he helped at the local vineyard and got previews of each years vintages. He offered us some tastings. The weather was stiflingly hot ('Aussie hot' - not 'UK hot') so we had been really looking forward to an ice cold tinnie or three while cooling off in his small pool. But it would have been rude to decline a free wine or two. Sure enough out came some glasses of red - full of flavour but so so strong - he reckoned around 16-17%!!!!. Needless to say after a few of those in the hot sun we looked like a couple of pommie prawns on a BBQ. Had to lay in the shade for a bit but soon recovered and adjourned to the local pub where we had a great time but sampled far too much of the local product. This session probably sowed the seeds of my drift away from powerful Aussie reds to something smoother and more quaffable.

These days it's either a Chilean red, a Rioja or an Italian red. Occasionally I lapse to an NZ Sauv Blanc. Trouble is I really like beers and malt whiskies too - but lifes too short and my liver is too precious to imbibe as much I would like!
