Numbers required, better than what we have bar Murray,

Get him in and another .
Not really, if we're mainly going to be playing one up front from the start of games, which we are, we only really need Murray, Barnes, and one other. Not sure Varney is really the one, the mystical 25 goal a season striker. When I saw him for Crewe he mainly seemed to be the link up man for Maynard.

No chance we will get him anyway, £16k a week and mate reckons QPR are faves

Not sure 1 up front with no LM but thats another debate.

Murray likely to get suspended or injured so I think we need 2 from what I make of Barnes

I think it's more that people are saying he's not the TYPE of player we need, which is totally understandable and sensible.

I may be wrong, and I'll be enthusiastic about it if he joins, but, if the £16k figure is to be believed, then that pretty much rules us out. I can't see us forking out five figures per week for anyone.

If Luke Varney is to drop down a division (there's no guarantee that he will either), then it'll surely only be the one of the usual high-spending suspects such as the Team from Hampshire near Portsmouth, Huddersfield, or even though they've got a winding-up order, Sheffield Wednesday, who still seem more than happy to fork out high wages for players in this division.

It's a loan. We won't be paying 100% of his wages.

Whichever way we play we need another winger. I'm pretty confident Lua-Lua is coming at some point though. Barnes hasn't had a great start but he showed last season that he's not a bad striker.

I would be VERY suprised if we paid £8k a week for a loan player, on a long-ish term basis

I know what you mean, but say we pay this guy 32k per month for 9 months that comes to 288k. So instead of paying 500k + say 5k per week for another striker of similar ability we could have one for a season at the cost of, err, well, what we payed for Liam Dickinson.

This guy is good and hey, money wise, this is pure speculation yet it all seems affordable.

As I said, it would be a loan deal, so we would probably have to pay about 50% at 8k, which is to my knowledge at the top end of our playing budget, perhaps the most expensive yet affordable.

The reports on Saturday were that there was a permanent move on the cards - From a loan perspective QPR and Bristol City are interested so can't see us accepting 50% of wages.

For what it's worth I can't quite see that anyone at Brighton is on anywhere near 8k a week...

Haven't Brizzle just signed 2 strikers today (Pittman & Stead)?
Surely they wouldn't want another?

QPR one of the favourites for promotion this season?
Would Varney be more of an asset to them than he would be to Derby?

Varney to BHA still sounds feasible to me, because I find it hard to believe that Varney would be on £16k a week anyway? :albion2:

Fair points, I've never understood the QPR thing, brizzle now looks unlikely BUT he's certainly in the Hulse/Savage wage bracket - One of the remaining contract legacies from the Adam Pearson/Paul Jewell era.....

I'll bow to your greater knowledge/interest in Derby County matters ....

On the wider issue though .... I'm not in the camp that believes all the hype about the huge salaries of 'ordinary' pro footballers?

I know somebody who is very friendly with the McSheffery family, and when Gary was with Coventry, before his move to Birmingham, his wages were apparently not even 25% of what was regularly reported as 'fact' on the Cov City message boards and the like.

I always remember that whenever I see NSC telling us how much a player is on?
How do any of us know .... it's pure speculation.

Good player from what I've seen/heard. Definitely wouldn't do us any harm to have him here if we can get him!
