Another fan that won't see Falmer

Forget Micky, and think long-term...

My step-father was an Albion fan, and his heyday was back in the 50's, as a regular at the Goldstone. I'm jealous that he was in the record crowd against Fulham in 1958, among many other well-remembered games. His last match was when I took him to the 1-0 win at Leicester, when he joined in the "stand up if you want Falmer" chants.

Well, he won't make it to Falmer, as he died on Sunday. At 84, I don't suppose any of his mates from the old days are on NSC. But, as he seemed to know everyone in Portslade, Southwick and Shoreham, it's possible your dad or grandad knew him - Rex Saunders. A lovely bloke, and I just would have loved to take him to the opening game at Falmer. RIP.

Another one for DeVecchi and her timewasting cronies to chalk up for their miserable campaign of deceit and obstruction.

RIP Rex.

I think the whole of NSC would like to flood this thread with messages of anger at LDC, and messages of condolences to you sir, for we all feel the same way. It's tragic for long term fans of this club to not get to witness our ultimate victory, our brand new stadium. It's such a shame to have read this, and I'm sorry for your family.

RIP Rex Saunders.

RIP Rex. Always sad to hear of fans not making it to Falmer purely because of the delays we've suffered.

Sadly, my dad died while we were still playing at Gillingham and wasn't even aware that there would be a bright future at Falmer. His last game was at the Goldstone, though. He wouldn't come to Gillingham when I offered to take him.....

Thanks for the nice words. Yeah, we all know who to blame for the delays, but it's water under the bridge now, and Rex wasn't a bitter man (except at the bar!).

We shared the Albion in a way that I didn't with my real Dad, and I know a lot of you will appreciate that sort of connection. PM me if any of your dads, uncles, grandads might have known him.

Sorry to hear your sad news
My condolences

RIP Rex.

I wonder without the taking the shine off the the first game at falmer there should be a minutes silence for all the fans that did not get to see it built because of the delays caused by LDC.

I am pretty sure I will have met him as I lived in Fishersgate in the mid Eighties, but afraid the name does not ring any bells,I am also sure he will be there when we kick off at the new stadium as will many who won't actually be there in body you only have to remember them for them to be there..............................I have a whole list unfortunately

Fantastic idea. A great many of us who know fans who have died since the Goldstone would really appreciate a gesture like this from the club.....why not put it to Insider to raise it:thumbsup:

I'd go along with that. But it would need to be worded carefully. whatever the rights and wrongs of the last years there would be no point in being specific.

Some sort of gesture or acknowledgement for the many Albion fans who have sadly died during the X no of years since we last had a permanent home and who will be at Falmer in spirit.

Wow, the first game is going to be emotional enough without that! Nice idea, though.

Sorry to hear your news, RIP Rex.

I wholeheatedly support those who condemn DeV and the like.

My grandad (long departed) took my dad when he was very small, My dad took me to the Goldstone when I was very little, I have taken my 5 year old twin boys to Withdean, and the first game at Falmer with 3 generations of my family there will be incredibly emotional for me. My dad is 72 now, and I really couldn't imagine how sad it would be if he didn't survive to come with his son and grandsons in 2011.

I credit you with making one of the best suggestions I've read on NSC.

I suspect all of us know Albion fans who wont be sitting in the stands at Falmer, and it would be fitting to look back, for a minute, just once more before we all concentrate on a bright future.

Sorry for your loss. My last remaining Uncle died two days ago. Hope you and your nearest and dearest are coping.
