8 (eight) changes expected tonight, looks like Gaz Southgate is taking the pragmatic approach.

A big 'IF' but if it's a draw tonight and the card count becomes level it goes to lots being drawn. I can remember in Italia '90 in our group, which we won, Holland and Ireland had identical records and had lots drawn to determine who finished 2nd and 3rd between them. Ireland got 2nd place, which meant Romania in the 2nd round then Italy in the quarters. Holland got West Germany in the 2nd round, but would have faced an 'easier' prospect than Italy in the shape of Czechoslovakia in the quarters. As group winners we obviously faced a very good Belgium side in the 2nd round, who hit the woodwork several times against us before won at the end of extra time, then faced an 'easy' Cameroon side we expected to beat, who we were 7 minutes away from going out against before Linker equalised from the spot.

A bit more recent than that in 2002, we finished 2nd in our group to Sweden, which meant we eventually got Brazil in the quarters obviously. That said, it meant we had Denmark in the 2nd round in the cool of the evening, rather than Senegal in the heat of the day who saw off Sweden in extra time. There was no guarantee we'd have beaten Senegal then either and no guarantee we'd have beaten a very good Turkey side in the quarters in the next round, had we gone down the the group winners route, rather than faced Brazil.

The permutations of tonight are all swings and roundabouts really in my opinion. Careful what you wish for.

He is nurturing harmony in the camp, giving them all a chance whilst sending them out to win.

Or is he?

C’mon England! Football’s coming home!

Apart from all the really famous Belgians, can anyone name a famous Belgian?

Does the famous Belgian born Asthmatic Sir Bradley Wiggins count, or is he one of the really famous Belgians like Jean-Claude van Damme?
