Perhaps it's not as bad as you think. The 'x' comes from the Greek letter 'X' or 'Chi' which looks like an X but is really the hard 'ch' sound. It is not unusual to see it used to represent Christ, although it is most often paired with a 'P' or 'Rho' which looks like a P but is really the 'R' sound. Hence the Chi Rho is 'Ch r' the first letters of Christos or Christ.

Hence xmas, if used properly, isn't too bad. However, few use it properly! So, yeah, I agree with you.

Sensitive, sentient, sometimes sententious, but secure that 'sence' isn't savvy. Sorry, but sadly it's sacrilegeous.
