Amex catering and local jobs

Without wishing to start a bushy style argument, I thought that one of the reasons that permission was given for the Amex COMMUNITY stadium was that it would provide local jobs in one of the most deprived areas of Sussex. Yet one of the many gripes about the catering is that the servers can barely speak English. What's going on?

The Estonian I spoke to lived in Brighton. That's pretty local.

People have to want to take the jobs. If any unemployed locals consider such work beneath them then why should there be any issue with others, be they Lithuanian, Polish or from the moon, getting involved, so long as they are capable and willing?

Well exactly, I'm just surprised that there aren't local people snapping up the jobs, which was implied at the hearings.

Where were all the kiosk people from then?

If she spoke like Cathy Burke then it would have been a local.

At the WSU familiarisation girl we spoke to was a Sussex Uni student. She said it was a nice local job for her and was enjoying it.

I guess it comes down to the caterers not paying a living wage that is sustainable for truly local people. (ie people that want to live in a house of their own, possibly raise a family and have a long-term commitment to the area). But if you are young, over from eastern Europe and sharing the rent and bills in a small house with 5 or 6 other people, then serving pies at the AMEX possibly makes financial sense.

It always grates when people say eastern Europeans are doing the jobs English people aren't prepared to do. I'm sure that is the case sometimes. But most often it is simply they are doing the jobs English people can't afford to do.

Nah, they're lazy.

If that IS the case, then it goes against one of the main arguments FOR the Amex no?

Yes, I agree with you.
I have no idea what the pay rates are for the people working in the kiosks, but I assume it to be minimum wage, or very close to it. Not a bad business model when you have thousands of people queuing up to willingly shell out £3.50 for a pie in a cardboard box!!

the east european is paying the same for their food, travel, etc as anyone else. sure in some cases they'll be 3, 4, 5 up in a flat or small house, but thats an option open to the English too. its what students do. in other words, they (the immigrant and students both) are willing to make the short term effort and sacrifices to get a job and move up and on, while too many others native seem to think they should be handed a good wage from school/college.

it grates me that people say the English cant afford to do the jobs, because i know in London there are thousands of cleaning and security jobs, paying decent money, taken by immigrants presumably because the working hours arent to the liking of the chaps and chapettes born and raised on the nearby estates. lost sympathy for them. the european immigrants are only here because there are jobs that allow a reasonable (ie at least as good if not better) standard of living compared to back home, and places like Poland and Portugal arent exactly developing countries.

back to the OP, you can only employ those locally who apply for the jobs, and there are a massive number of students and other short term workers not originally be from the area, who would find the few hours a week suitable.

I used to work with a few Polish lads and they all lived with their wives and kids in houses, and drove cars, and shopped at Tesco.

As its minimum wage you won't find many people able to (or wish to) sustain themselves on that little, especially in Brighton where I'm sure you wouldn't be able to rent much a month on those wages alone (remember its only a few hours a week). Being on the distribution list for the stadium jobs, and having a look at the Azure website - its mostly £6.50 per hour. So when thats not a full time job, it becomes a job you do to supplement another job or a pocket money job for youngsters.....
