Am I imagining things, or did we sign a player for half a million quid last week?

The point is, regardless of the comparative value of money now and then, we have rarely come close to matching the Ritchie fee in over twenty years. No, it's not a lot to some clubs, but I remember thinking it was a big deal by our standards when we found £300k for some lazy Rochdale striker three or four years ago, so it is still significant to us. I know what EP is trying to say.

We've had years of free transfers and players costing £25,000. And how many clubs' record transfer fee still stands from the 1980s?

A) The fee is undisclosed
B) 500k, if that is the correct figure, now is not the same as 500k then
C) I agree we should move on from Muzza now

the relative worth of £500,000.00 from 1980 is:

£1,600,000.00 - using the retail price index
£1,560,000.00 - using the GDP deflator
£2,480,000.00 - using the average earnings
£2,730,000.00 - using the per capita GDP
£2,990,000.00 - using the share of GDP

I think Hoskins is going to do well, you need a trick or two in this division up front i think and he has them, a bit of creativity that will be vital.

We will be blasting our record fee out of the water over the coming weeks, at least one signing @ over £1M I would expect.

What's the basis for that??

I would've imagined TB would be pretty modest about investment for the time being, perhaps waiting to see how we fare and with the good eye for bargain talents who could gain in value. In Gus he trusts too though.

Our record signing for a player when we were in the second tier is I think £238,000 for Teddy Maybank.

Although we paid Man Utd 500k for Ritchie, we also made 400k selling a certain Peter Ward to Forest in that same triangle deal that saw Gary Birtles move to Man Utd for 1.5 million, so really our outlay was just 100k in cash.

So the deal for Hoskins, it could be argued is the most we have paid in cash terms beating the 400k paid for Michael Robinson and also for Gordon Smith.

I think that before the end of the summer Bloom will go big (£1m+) on someone, ideally a striker.

One quick point on the Michael Owen rumour. No it wont happen, cant see him moving his family down here. Other than Madrid he has lived in Chester whatever club he has played for. Gus & Bloom may well have made contact with his people but i think that's as far as it goes. What i dont understand is why certain people on here get so angry everytime his name is mentioned.. The rumour was probably started by young lads who have seen the Amex, the fact we've romped League 1, have THE best up and coming manager around and thought why not? Who can blame these people from dreaming that we may be able to lure an ex-england striker to join in the party.

Those of us not old enough to remember the glory days of the 80's have pretty much, bar the odd promotion, been treated to dross from the Priestfield to bloody Withdean.

The odd outrageous rumour doesn't hurt anyone.

One of our best signings - Bert Murray 1972 paid for by the fans - buy a player fund, sponsored marches etc etc

If we're promoted the Hoskins fee will rise to £800k I believe. A pleasant change from few years ago when we had to rely on the forty notes fund.

or the "Alive and kicking" (and that was only six years ago?)
