No, it's a New Zealand Weta. There are no horrible spiders to eat them in NZ. They're munched on by Owls.

And that ugly fucker above is 20cm long!

The biggest tarantula on record was a female Goliath Bird-Eater who had a leg-span of just over 18". She was born and raised in a really exotic tropical location - Glasgow!

They hunt in packs after dark (they take on a mob of Leopard slugs that also live under my plant pots).

I think the really big Wetas live in Caves, so you probably won't run into them. The smaller ones live everywhere (apart from where the Mantis's live - they rip there necks off if they meet them).

Blue Juice, go to Oz mate. I am also terrified of spiders but had the time of my life there. You get used to it, and you don't really see them anywhere. Anyone who gets the chance to visit should go.

Goliath Bird-Eaters usually only grow to a maximum of around 13" or 14", but the Glasgow-bred specimen was a bit of a monster.

This species (along with several other species of large tarantula) are known to take baby birds from their nests. Their diet, which usually comprises of large insects, can also include mice, frogs, small snakes, lizards and even bats.

Nearly all of the 105 spider families have venom glands, which produce the venom used by the spider. Most spider venom is harmless to humans. The venom glands are located in the cephalothorax of the spider.

In most spiders, the venom is a nerve toxin, so it affects the nervous system of the predator. The venom is injected into the prey by the spider's fangs. This paralyzes the prey.

Then the spider takes its fangs out and places its mouth over the holes, made by the fangs, and forces saliva into the holes in the prey. This saliva causes the insides of the prey to turn to liquid, which the spider can then suck out of the prey like a kind of slush.

It takes my girls about an hour to eat a large cricket.
