But the fact remains he hasn’t started.

However, your second observation is a really good one IMO. Monty was more restrained with defending the priority, and naturally having a ‘proper’ CB helped as well.

Good for AJ - I also think he’ll go out on loan.

I assume you hankering for Big Jurg’s return now?

No need to sound so surprised.

& always #TeamBigJurg.

The nonsense around Ali was only ever an appetizer.

In wasn’t there today as I’m up North for t’holidays. I have been a serial detractor of Alireza but I was absolutely delighted for him today, the bloke has had a miserable year and a half but his attitude appears to have remained very focused, his video/interview after the game speaks volumes of the man’s character. Kudos to Potter too for playing him when it would have been easier to leave to him rot.

Really happy for him - hope he can push on. Humbled to see how much it meant to him.

That’s what struck me the most. He could have easily adopted a shitty attitude but to have finally scored, made a positive impact and be so humble but utterly delighted is a very endearing trait. Tonight I doff my cap to Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

That’s right - and he could probably leave a make a nice packet elsewhere but he’s been really trying to make this work. It’s often an empty gesture but that little tap of the badge after he scored was a genuine thing for the fans. If that’s all he ever does then I’m pleased for him. I don’t doubt his ability, in fact think he is one of our most complete technical players, but the issue for him is getting to grips with the style of the league. Only a select group of players such as KDB can lack aggression and pace and still hold their own in the PL.

Spot on.

If anyone can be arsed to go back over this thread you'll see I have always seen something in him: subtle clever quick short passes (too clever for some of his team mates in the past). All he needed was a coach who knows how to connect his skills with the rest of the team.

He was interviewed on R5 after the game: better English than most English players, massive positive comments about his team mates, attitude spot on.

And a nice goal. What's not to like? ???
Humble pie?

Regardless, it's early days, so let's not get carried away. The one thing we've all known for a long time is that he's a fantastic professional. It must have been so crap for him knowing what he's been able to produce for previous clubs, and not producing it or getting much opportunity to produce it here, yet he's just carried on trying in training, with what appears to be no moaning at all.

It would be fantastic if he keeps getting opportunities and keeps playing as well as he did today. No idea if it'll happen, so I'll just enjoy today for now.

In the same way that the Greyhound looked like a footballer who won his place in a lucky dip and would never play for us again. Comes back from a bad injury and looks great. Potter is a genius FACT (or maybe these players just needed handling properly and playing a formation that suited them)
Players who've been good enough to get contracts with our first team are rarely as bad as some will believe. If you're maybe not quite as good as your teammates, and you don't play very well (which will happen against the top opposition we're regularly up against), your confidence takes a knock, you don't get game time, and it's pretty tough to make it from there. But that doesn't mean you're shit.

Stuck a fiver each way on him at to score the first goal at 10-1. Just had a feeling it might be his day. Thanks Alireza

Nice one. Said to my son once I heard he was playing I fancied him to score ( probably a little tongue in cheek ). Great he has though and a really good one at that

I reckon he’ll do a Locadia and score in the next game against Chelsea, then do f*ck all again for the rest of his Brighton career.

Not looking to do a told you so as he’s certainly not “there” yet, but yesterdays performance genuinely wasn’t a shock. He had to have a day where it all started to click for him.

Wasn’t surprised when he didn’t get cut - unlike Locadia who is shit, and Andone who had appeared to have other issues - as Ali certainly is more capable than Locadia, and seemingly a much better attitude than Andone.

Clearly got plenty of ability, just needs the confidence to go with that now and the understanding that will come with settling in alongside teammates and getting more minutes. He’s gonna be fine.

His tracking back and defending was something that really impressed me. He fought a lot harder than Trossard did. Hope it all comes good for him.
