This time last year wasn't so bad. We even reckoned we'd get the Ward signing over the line, and get some players Sami knew from Germany.

Alas, the disaster was yet to happen.

It is the grim season we had, and the large amount of transfers we need, which fosters the sense of urgency to see progress being made.

I don't know - at this time last year it all seemed OK. Most of us were quite excited at the appointment of Liverpool legend Hyypia as our new manager and hoped to reach the play-offs again - or better. It was only later, after we started playing that the realisation set in that we'd made a lot of mistakes over the summer.

I wasn't there but Saints at home in pre season had a couple of people I go with very concerned about the ridiculous tactics with the full backs. The writing was on the wall for those that cared to look before the season even started.

None of the signings we brought in were that inspiring.

Given we lost the likes of Ward, Kuszcak, Ulloa, Upson etc, what we replaced them with was bang average. Granted, O'grady on paper had a good season, but anyone that thought he would ever replace Ulloa needs their head checked.

A small few people thought with the late flurry of loans/signings (Baldock etc), that we were going to be top half again; god knows why. When you look at our squad (notably the attacking players) and compare them to all the other top half teams, we were never going to come close.

Would be quite an effort for a palace goon to go to, so I sort of assume this one may be true and happening soon...

Has taken enough attention to select a vacant squad number too.

If it was a Palace fan it would be funny. But I assume Iran also has it's share of football fans who make stuff up, so I wouldn't take Wiki as gospel.

Thats good enough for me i'm off to get his name printed. Which is going to cost me a pretty penny.

We're supposedly 'in advanced talks' but I highly doubt this deal is complete, or even particularly close to being complete. His agent said yesterday something along the lines of 'There is a lot of interest so we are in no rush, Alireza needs to think very carefully about the next step in his career etc'. I'm still pessimistic about it going through but we shall see.

Wiki thing + Guy Butters tweet equaled brief excitement. However, loosely connecting two things on the interweb to make a certainty is the stuff of TIN FOIL HATS.

Or is it? *makes the Twilight Zone noise*

That Wikipedia even has a number which i assume is squad number 19 (just guessing)

Squad numbers have not been allocated for this year yet and CH is quite traditional in such things. He looks at his squad and the 1 to 11 squad numbers usually go to what he feels will be his most likely starting line up; however it is impossible to do that untill all signings are complete.

I think this is a hoax at Wikipedia but that said i still think thee is a good chance we will sign him

Unless there is a way back into the Albion fold, for Adrian Colunga, then the number 7 shirt is free.

Yes, agree that the pre-season friendlies were worrying - I was referring to the zone we are in now, before pre-season started. Hyypia in and making all the right noises about more attacking football, Toko in - was supposed to be good(!) Everything in the garden looked reasonably rosy ...........
