Currently half enjoying the Nathan Fake album 'Providence' that's just come out on Ninja Tune. I mean, it's fine, but what is it? It just seems to happen in a quite agreeable manner and then ends. He's touring soon and I guess it might be a bit more interesting live. The stuff he was making a few years ago is better.

The new Soulwax album was well worth the wait; if you are into this sort of stuff you will not be disappointed. It's more synth, percussive and beat laden than their disco stuff but only slightly so. So excited to see them perform this a week tomorrow.

 

[Vatican Citys No.2 Keeper]

Currently on a second listen of the latest Steel Panther album, "Lower The Bar".Not to everyone's taste I know, what with them being a straight-up parody of Hair Metal/Glam. Probably the most consistent album they've put out since "Feel The Steel", however nothing they release will come close to touching that record. Pussy Ain't Free, That's When You Came In, I Got What You Want and Walk of Shame would all make great additions to their live shows, which are always top notch and lots of fun!



Other releases I've had a listen to today are new singles from Chuck Berry and Wednesday 13.

The awaited new album from London Grammar, early June. One way or another, the football will be done and dusted by then.

Love, love, love the new Moonlandingz album 'Interplanetary Class Classics' which is also Resident Records' album of the week. Lots of nods to 80s goth, scuzzy guitar aplenty and with tongues firmly in cheek. This is one of the slower ones where they've gone all Phil Spector. I first heard it on Marc Riley's show and fell in love with it straight away.

Carla Dal Forno - 'You Know What It's Like'

Although this was released late in 2016, I only heard and subsequently bought this album on Bandcamp this year, all sold out now but I saw that Resident have it in stock so it's still available. She's on the Blackest Ever Black label who have that name for a reason as they specialise in the more esoteric, dark side of music. She reminds me in part of Anika from Invada Records, there's a heavy German-synth sound, slow pounding drums and ethereal lyrics. It's been one of my go to albums on my commute for a few weeks now.

The GNOD album is my early front-runner.

Nods to Swans, Spacemen 3 and The Fall and for my money the best of a career that already includes two classics.

They've been superb the last couple they've visited Brighton and are back at Green Door Store in May.

This is the only track I can find on YT at the mo, it's a bit of a straight up punk thrasher, the rest of the album has far more in the way of dynamics

Insomnia has me listening to music and in particular the new album by Diet Cig 'Swear I'm Good At This'. Unashamed guitar pop and I love it. They are a NY duo with a slightly twee female singer who sounds a bit like Waxahatchee which is no bad thing. They do like to let rip every now and then too with a good old crunching early 90s sound.

And another album is the new Mount Eerie album 'A Crow Looked At Me'. It's an extremely personal affair, all focused around the lead singer having lost his wife to cancer shortly after she gave birth to their daughter. All the instruments used and the paper that he used to write the album were his late wife's. An incredibly sad tale and I hope that it proves cathartic but the end result is for us outsiders something quite beautiful.

If you're a fan of Stornoway then this will be right up your street. English Folky band with harmony singing melding traditional and modern folk music, even veering into Vampire Weekend territory.
