Staying with the ladies...I'm also quite taken with Lana Del Ray's new single. It's got no surprises there but she has a style and she's bloody good at it. I know she's not very fashionable but I do like her.

It's a great single and video, a real tonic for the times. The fact LDR isn't considered very hip makes me like her all the more.

Just got Temples - Volcano and Nadia Reid - Preservation for the trip up to Nottingham tomorrow. A quick scan through has whetted the appetite nicely.

You wait for one brilliant female singer/songwriter to release a single and then three turn up at once. Laura Marling's latest single here and it sounds like she's been listening to a fair bit of Chrissie Hynde. Love the guitars in this song. Adele may have the better voice but Laura Marling is the complete package.

Thanks for that one Buzz, I think this an interesting new development from her -- I was really struck by her initially, but felt that despite the quality and lyrics it was all about samey. I'm seeing her for the first time in a couple of weeks: this has just made me that little bit more excited.

I was given a few promos last week, most if not all are completely new names to me and I've been mightily impressed with all of them.

Chicano Batman - if you like a very tight, funky band with all sorts of influences and a rhythm section that just rocks then look no further. Lots of influences, West Coast, bit of Latin, lots of disco, James Brown it's all there. This is a seriously cool album, I had some muso friends round last night who were all glowing with praise for this.

Alice Jemima - ''Alice Jemima'

An understated and quite technical electro/synth-based album by a singer/songwriter with a knack for great pop tunes. The album works on several levels, I first heard it on my headphones on my commute and there's all sorts going on, the production is top notch but then I also had it on as background music whilst doing dinner and unlike some albums, the records work well played out loud and are memorable rather than being instantly forgettable and blending into one. Her voice is quite twee, she's certainly no Florence or Lykke Li and I know that can be a bit marmite but it's right up my street.

Brian Jonestown Massacre - 'Don't Get Lost'

An incredibly big, hugely ambitious and wide-ranging album that left me quite stunned. I've listened to it 3 times and still don't think I've begun to scratch the surface of it. There's lots of their traditional heavy psychedelia but also a dance track or two and all sorts. There's also guest appearances aplenty with Tim Burgess, Tess Parks and various others. The chap at Resident compared parts of it to Primal Scream and he's right but I also got a whiff of JAMC, Nick Cave, Floyd. It's certainly a great album with absolutely no quibbles from me. I'm amazed at how much great psychedelic music is being made right now and this is right up there. As good as The Flaming Lips latest and I don't say that lightly.

(This track "Groove is in the Heart" is NOT a cover of the Deee-lite classic)

And I'm now currently working my way through The Pigeon Detectives with Conor Oberst and Nadia Reid still to listen to. I've got high hopes that this could be a good year for music. I was reading somewhere, can't remember where, about how we are now entering a sustained period of divided politics with all of the anger and frustrations that brings but that the flip side is that it is often a fertile breeding ground for music. Not only that but music at these times also takes a much bigger role in people's lives. Here's hoping.

Apparently, she quit the music business temporarily to become a yoga instructor so perhaps the time away has helped take her in new directions. Enjoy the gig.

Battling with the Dutch Uncles new album. Some tracks are punchier or complicated than the last album which I really enjoyed. Other tracks seem more confused. I'll keep going as I like their sound.

I was a bit disappointed by it. I can't say I've heard anything by them previously or if I have then it hasn't registered but Marc Riley raves about them and there's been quite a lot of hype on social media so I had a quick shufti of the first 3 or 4 tunes and was underwhelmed and wondering what the big deal was.

I've been catching up with some work whilst listening to the new Feelies album 'In Between' tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Formed in 76, parted in the early 90s and then reformed around 10 or so years back, they wear their Velvet Underground influences on their sleeves with this album. Cerebral and quite low-key but then again this band have nothing to prove and are clearly just enjoying playing together.

I have mentioned this band previously in this thread but finally their album is out and it's an absolute belter. If funky afro-beats are your thing then you need to listen to the new Ibibio Sound Machine album. They're Nigerian/British and as funky as you like. The whole album is available to stream on Bandcamp too so there are no excuses. Just check this song out. 1066familyman and daveinprague, I think this might be right up your street.

Check out local stars Normanton Street for some funky stylings, though not quite as funky as that, granted

Do anyone else forget purchases? I just remember I bought the new Andy Stott album a while back. Only just got round to listening to it today. It's pretty good.
