The Avalanches - 'Wildflower' is my album of the year so far.
Also enjoying the new 'Glass Animals' album 'How To Be A Human', every listen I hear something different.

Wildflower is growing on me.

You can listen to Nick Cave's new album here. I'm up to track 3 and it's been very emotional so far. It's a massive YES from me as a great return to form from the master. It's such a shame it took personal tragedy to get him back there.

The last three tracks, I Need You, Distant Sky & Skeleton Tree are particularly affecting if you ask me. I'm fighting the tears at work.

The hand of Warren Ellis's soundtrack work is all over this album. The instrumentation is sparse, it's intimate to the point of utter discomfort. He hasn't done anything like this for some time, if ever.

Agreed. Having listened to the whole album I think it's taken him in a whole new direction. If anything it sounds a lot more like his soundtrack albums that he has made with Ellis - in particular The Road but it's far edgier. I'm trying to think what it does sound like and it reminds me in part of Talk Talk's 'Laughing Stock'. It certainly has that post-rock feel to it and the uncomfortable minimalism as you quite rightly point out. Those last 3 tracks are harrowing. Distant Sky is particularly difficult to listen to.

Now that is an absolutely fantastic comparison. I know exactly what you are saying.

I don't want to oversell the misery though. It's a record with this almost 'a'int life shit but it's better than death vibe,' there's like this perverse hope to it that 'The Boatman's Call' didn't have. Or maybe I need to give The Boatman's Call another listen.

Just got it today, and it might get the chance to listen to it this afternoon, but have a busy w/e, with the Jazz Festival, etc, but Resident also waxed lyrical about it.

It sounds intriguing but that link doesn't work (I note that it's Apple music so it probably only plays on a Mac) but it looks like an album to get. I've been a bit disappointed with his last few efforts, this sounds more like the real thing

Strange. I'm on a PC and the link works for me. Try this link to another site that's streaming it although it's still the Apple Tunes thingy.

Failing that, the official Nick Cave Youtube channel has all the tracks as audio-only videos on there.

The new Angel Olsen album is just wonderful. With the new Wedding Present and Nick Cave albums out too September is proving to be a top month.

Just been playing this fabulous album 159173.jpg

Has anyone mentioned L.A. Salami yet? He's a 20-something singer/songwriter from SE London who apparently only picked up a guitar a few years ago when he was sleeping rough and has since gone from strength to strength. Loads of influences - Waterboys, Nick Drake, Arctic Monkeys, blues and his delivery reminds me of Mirel Wagner too. There's a dark humour throughout.

The album's called Dancing With Bad Grammar and it's quite a beast. 15 tracks and a fair few clocking in at over 6 minutes long.
