New Sun a Kil a moon album - Universal Themes - out today. Enjoyed first listen but it's certainly going to be a tough nut to crack - wilfully inaccessible at times with the lyrics and song lengths.

Interested what this Jamie XX album sounds like. It's got excellent reviews in most places but noticably the publications that take their electronic music a bit more seriously, The Quietus, Resident Advisor & Boomkat have all slaughtered it.

I've never seen the appeal of any xx stuff.

One album I've listened to a few times and won't be returning to is Florence and the Machine 'How Big How Blue How Beautiful'. I guess that her style just isn't my bag. I've read reviews where they say she's ditched the theatrics and homage to Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush but I genuinely can't hear much difference between this and her previous output. There's loud tunes and there's quiet tunes. The loud tunes invariably have a quiet opening and then build to the crescendo at between the 1 minute and 1 minute 30 mark. The quiet ones sound like she's going to get loud any moment but she holds back. Maybe her voice is as much a curse as it is a gift but I'm not sure after listening to the new long player 3 or 4 times that I could pick any of the tunes out in a line-up with her earlier stuff. In fact, there's nothing too memorable about any of the new tunes. They're loud or quiet.

But one that I would recommend is Bop English 'Constant Bop'. He's a Texan and it shows but add to the country boy some glam rock, some Southern blues, some funk too. Imagine asking Marc Bolan doing the soundtrack to a Smokie and the Bandit film and you'll get an idea of the all-round smiles and lack of pretension that the album has. It's one of those feelgood bands that get you doing air guitar around the kitchen or nodding your head to whilst driving. This is what I'm rambling on about:

I've listened to it a few times and like it, some very nice stuff on it. It's more a bunch of songs than a coherent album but then producers albums often are....Todd Terje being a recent prime example.

I just read The Quietus review and they seem disappointed partially because the album doesn't follow their expectations gleaned from Jamie's pre-release explanation of the album. I can understand that.

I note this Algiers band are getting some decent reviews - the two tracks here are good, even if one does sound like early Nine Inch Nails.

I find it has it's time and place. SHC has just mentioned NIN..I've never got them. I remember [MENTION=5200]Buzzer[/MENTION] saying he didn't get Led Zep.

I'm not of this opinion and have a lot of time for The xx. However, it really is time that British contemporary pop music moved on from trying to recreate their first album. This downbeat, serious, minimal, pop has got so ****ing dull. Yes, London Grammar, I'm looking right at you.

'Spirit of Eden' is hands down one of the most prescient records ever made, Johnny Greenwood in particular was paying attention. It's ****ing outstanding as well.
