It’s that time of year again, ie half way through November, and Rough Trade are first out of the traps with their top 100 albums of the year.

I’ll share my top thirty tomorrow I’ve got them all listed on musicboard but there’s still two months left. I’ve listened to 191 so far, there’s been a lot of dross. Not expecting anything to come out thats going to sneak in the top 10, but you never know, still got a long list of stuff still to listen to.

Did they really go with Jack White Number 1? I personally thought it was crap.

I have a feeling these aren't in any particular order. I have probably listened to about half of these, but, I must confess, I haven't done a repeat listen to many of them. Some that I have really liked out of this 100: Sudan Archives; Black Midi; Destroyer; Surprise Chef; The Chats; Binker and Moses; Spiritualized; They Hate Change; Black Country, New Road; Horsegirl; Makaya McCraven; Ibibio Sound Machine.
Off the top of my head a couple that aren't here that are worthy: Soul-Glo; The Soft Pink Truth; Gabriels; Panda Bear and Sonic Boom; Superchunk. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

I tend to agree.....how do you discern number 24 from 25 etc. But, I love these lists, they're always a good discussion, a reminder of some albums I might have missed and introduce me to knew albums and artists I otherwise would not have listened to. Two great examples of the latter from previous years are Sault and Floating Points. I also look at other people's comments, e.g. @smillie's garden for tips as well. Once the year is done, I enter the new year with a mountain of new music to listen to.

A good annual thread for the NSC music fan.

I wasn't sure I'd have any of them and have definitely spent too much of the year listening to 6 Music and Spotify playlists. However, Skinty Fia has been played often round these parts, I just forgot it was a 2022 album and I ended up in a Wet Leg / Yard Act rabbit hole for much of the year (that also included Billy Nomates and Dry Cleaning). I got the Confidence Man album on the back of their bonkers Glasto performance, another one that's a regular at weekends.

I guess I can now look through the other 96 or so and start adding them to my listening!

The Wayes Blood album isn’t released until Friday and it’s in their top 10. I guess they might have pre-release copies but even so

I have ten of those.

Many of my favourite albums of the year are not in the list - but I guess Rough Trade is still very indie-centric, so other genres are not on the agenda so much for them. I'll listen to, and research, some of the albums that I hadn't heard of.

Natalie's new offering is doing the internet rounds now apparently, it sounds good to have her back.

Of those listed The Delines is the best imho.

A mate has strongly recommended that I check out Fontaines DC, which I intend to do soon.

Very disappointed that Half Man Half Biscuit's latest (The Voltarol Years) is not in the list - I think it is one of their very best, musically and lyrically; they just get better and better.

I like her earlier work so expecting good things, not convinced by this list if being totally honest, my AOTY isn't even on it.

A mate has strongly recommended that I check out Fontaines DC, which I intend to do soon.

Very disappointed that Half Man Half Biscuit's latest (The Voltarol Years) is not in the list - I think it is one of their very best, musically and lyrically; they just get better and better.

I also very much enjoyed the Half Man Half Biscuit album, its the first of theirs I've ever listened to.

The Soul Glo album is a very decent album thats been a bit of a grower for me.

For me, the obvious ones off the top of my head that are missing include Loyle Carner, Fred Again, Franc Moody, Bob Vylan, The Comet is Coming, Jamie T, Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn, Working Men's Club, Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, Gabriels...and Arcade Fire, though I guess they've been cancelled.

I went to see Wayes Blood on a bit of a whim around 3 years or so ago. I’m so glad I did, she’s a brilliant artist and also much fun when performing live.
