Albion's worst ever player sale?

Too far from the sun
One that got away I reckon was Eric Steele. Seeing how well he played for Watford in the top league, he would have been much better than Moseley or Digweed.
From what I saw of him for us he wasn't though. From what I remember he was a good shot-stopper but seemed to shit himself if he got more than 2 feet off his line.

Good thread, but I still reckon it's Saunders for £60K.

He's one of the few truly top class players I've seen wear the stripes, it was obvious he would become a very big player and win loads of caps for Wales. His goal ouput is only part of it - he was played wide right with us a created loads of goals as well.

I really liked Dean Saunders as he always gave his best for the team, but not sure about some of the plaudits he has had on here.

He was probably worth about £200k IMO when we sold him (remember a few months later we sold both Danny Wilson and Terry Connor for the same amount).

Meopham, Kent.

Maybe a bit more than that, but certainly the £1m he went for a year later was vastly inflated, as it was just Murdoch moving funds between two clubs he owned (albeit one of them was in his sons name), and just wanted Derby to be buying a £1m player, and show that Oxford had done a tremendous bit of business. Taking the best player from Oxford without the fans feeling like they were being robbed or treated like a feeder club.

He was neither slow and his passing was the best within the club at the time, but again he wasn't much of a slogger that you obviously adore so much.

Maybe the answer is in your answer, what was good for third division football probably isnt good enough for the top league.

No one protested when he left. 101 games 4 goals!

Bolton splashed out £250,000 for the battling midfielder in November 1978, before Brighton & Hove Albion acquired his services for the fee of £220,000 in February 1980.

Neil joined Manchester City from Brighton in 1983 for £35,000

Excellent buisness by BHA there - lost £185,000 in 3 years and his value dropped by 84% while he wasa BHA player

In fact we got better without him as we replaced him with Tony Grealish

I think you will find it was Fat Bob Maxwell, not Murdoch, who owned Derby and Oxford.

Fat Bob once told me to f*** off too!

No we didn't, we swapped Grealish for Nobby Horton.

Just because we sold him for £35k it does not mean it was good business. McNab played for City in the top flight for a good few seasons.

Good business for man City but certainly NOT by BHA

I acknowledge that Mcnab will never be seen as a club legend, his performances were inconsistent, but I am driven to defend him due to a very good friend who trained with him everyday and my own preferences to a certain type of player.

However to some on here to throw Grealish down as some sort of success is baffling.

I think that Grealish will himself concede that he really didn't have a great time here too with the fans getting on his back.

I remember Mike Bailey taking him off at half time, I think against Tottenham to get him out of the firing line.

I have been told that we are perceived as an unforgiving bunch of fans, maybe thinking about Mcnab and Grealish maybe we are.

You can add to that list the likes of Poskett, Maybank, Gregory and others who had a hate-hate relatlionship with the West Stand.

+ Jimmy Case, a multipe Division 1 champion winner and European cup winner at the time. What was he worth at the time £600k?? That would have made Lawrenson £1.5million and british record at the time I imagine?

WRONG. We signed Jimmy Case 48 hours later for £350k. It was independent of Lawrenson signing for the Dippers.

Wasn't Steele sold following a dust up with Gary Williams at Old Trafford?

mike robinson only 150 grand to liverpool

It was £250k, he was also the highest paid player in the top division when he was sold, along with Steve Foster. They were both on 10 year contracts and were being paid £70k a year, which considering it only cost £1.30 to watch the Albion, and there was no TV money, was the reason why the club was effectively bust for the next 25 years.

Perhaps we should add to the list our most expensive ever signing, Andy Ritchie.

He cost £500,000 in 1980. He was never popular with the fans, due to the fact he replaced Peter Ward, and went to Leeds in a Jimmy Melia deal as a straight swap for Terry Connor, who only scored once for the rest of the season that we were relegated from the top flight. Ritchie scored 26 goals in 95 starts for the Albion, not prolific, but it was in Division 1.

Ritchie then scored 170 goals after leaving the Albion for Oldham and Leeds, admittedly mostly in a lower division, but he was a clever player and certainly didn't deserve the perpetual moaning he got from the West Stand.
