Albion's worst ever player sale?

Excellent call on Ian Muir. Leaving aside the forced 'fire sales' (chief of which was indeed Dean Saunders) Muir could have been an absolute legend for us. Tranmere used to play on Friday nights and programmes like Saint 'n' Greavsie would always show his goals the next day. It got to the stage where I hated watching it.

Another good call on Neil McNab, criminally underrated by vast swathes of the ignorant Goldstone crowd.

Or Roy Keane. We actually had decied to sign him, but at the last moment we signed some other Paddy McMurphy

Not according to his autobiography we hadn't. We were due to take a look at him on trial, but then heard he wasn't tall enough and told him not to bother coming over from Ireland.

One that got away I reckon was Eric Steele. Seeing how well he played for Watford in the top league, he would have been much better than Moseley or Digweed.

Always a quality player for us, but the crowd, brought up on a previous diet of kick and rush third division football, never like him and used to give him dog's abuse.

rubbish (and that was what mcnab was)

he was slow, couldn't pass and invariably out of position when we were under pressure. He had the midfield presence of a gnat.

and that "diet of kick and rush third division football" had seen the most success seen by Albion Fans for thirty years!

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Zamora yet.

Sold to Tottenham for £1.5 million
Swapped to West Ham
Bought by Fulham (!!!!) for £4.8 million

net loss to Albion of £3.3 million

So how come he was twice voted player of the season at City and played 200+ games for them?

He was a similar stlye of player to David Batty, broke up play and did the simple things right.

No one would have paid £4.8million for a third division player though. £1.5 million was a fair price at the time because prices were subdued due to the fall of ITV Digital. We had turned down £3million from Everton 12 months prior to him going to Spurs, but the board wanted to try to survive in the Championship rather than take the cash.

He has scored less goals in the seven years since leaving us than in the time he played for the Albion.

Meopham, Kent.
The bank forced that one. The Albion were skint and Barry Lloyd was told to sell a player. Saunders' record for the Albion was reasonable, but unspectacular. 21 goals in 72 games over two seasons was nothing to write home about, but he was worth more than the £60k we received for him.

His record was somewhat harmed by the Lloyd tenure when old Bazza seemed to think he should be playing out wide rather than down the middle.

He was clearly a cut above in the previous Catlin season, and should have been the centre piece of our attack.

So, no-one is suggested Adam Virgo, when we got a measley £1.5m from Celtic for him?

Whilst not a sale as such, Micky Adams letting Richie "The Bear" Barker go to Macclesfield on a free in '99 was a shocking bit of business at the time.

He went on to have a prolific two years with Macclesfield, earn a lucrative deal with Rotherham and helped lead them to The Championship, whereas for the first season at Withdean he was replaced at the Albion by useless Scottish soldier Dave Cameron and Aidan Moorhouse.

Obviously, Micky got Albion's act together the following season and assembled an absolutely oustanding and successful side, learning from his mistakes the previous year. I just remember not being too impressed at the time.

I may be wrong but I think Micky let him go on compassionate grounds, as Richie's dad was very ill and needed looking after.

He only scored 23 goals in two seasons for Macc, good return, but I wouldn't call in prolific.

I agree with you, but I think our front line was Terry Connor and Alan Biley, so Deano was pushed out wide.

If we are talking free transfers as well, we let Andy Crosby go far too soon and we should have kept Lee Johnson.

He was neither slow and his passing was the best within the club at the time, but again he wasn't much of a slogger that you obviously adore so much.

Maybe the answer is in your answer, what was good for third division football probably isnt good enough for the top league.
